The To­ba­go Re­gion­al Health Au­thor­i­ty has launched an in­ves­ti­ga­tion in­to the death of a moth­er and ba­by at the Scar­bor­ough Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal ear­li­er this week.

Nadea Shanghie, of Spey­side, died on Wednes­day, a day af­ter the death of her ba­by dur­ing a C-sec­tion op­er­a­tion. Her fam­i­ly has since called for an­swers. 

Chief Sec­re­tary Far­ley Au­gus­tine vowed that the in­ves­ti­ga­tion would be thor­ough.

At a me­dia con­fer­ence yes­ter­day he said, “It has to be in­ves­ti­gat­ed be­cause we would cer­tain­ly like to know what hap­pened and whether or not there is any cul­pa­bil­i­ty on the side of pub­lic health­care sys­tem. We are not shy­ing away from that at all.”

Au­gus­tine said Sec­re­tary of Health, Well­ness and So­cial Pro­tec­tion Faith B.Yis­rael willd give an ac­count of what hap­pened, the out­come of the in­ves­ti­ga­tion and the steps the RHA will take.

He lament­ed, “This one hit home. I taught the moth­er, the fa­ther of the ba­by. I know the fam­i­ly very well. It is a fam­i­ly that over the last two years ex­pe­ri­enced quite a bit of trau­ma with deaths.”

Shanghie’s grand­fa­ther died dur­ing her grand­moth­er’s fu­ner­al ser­vice last year. 

Au­gus­tine said, “The TRHA is do­ing the in­ves­ti­ga­tions. The THA is ex­tend­ing con­do­lences to the fam­i­ly we are tru­ly sor­ry for their loss. We al­so are of­fer­ing all the as­sis­tance nec­es­sary.”

He said this in­clud­ed help­ing with fu­ner­al arrange­ments and pro­vid­ing oth­er sup­port need­ed.
