Trinidad and Tobago and Canada have reportedly opened the door to explore the possibility of further collaboration and cooperation in the energy sector, including this country tapping into Canada’s expertise with hydrogen as a power source.

An official statement from the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries hints at the possibilities, following a meeting this week between Energy Minister Stuart Young MP and Canada’s High Commissioner His Excellency Kumar Gupta.

The Ministry notes that on the August 23rd, the Minister Young and HE Gupta met to discuss bilateral arrangements between both countries and energy related matters.

During these discussions, Minister Young expressed Trinidad and Tobago’s willingness and commitment to working with Canada to develop the energy sector, and reiterated Government’s commitment to strengthen the relationship with Canada in the areas of technology transfer and energy cooperation.

Both men also talked about the involvement of Canadian companies—such as Touchstone—in oil and gas, but also focused on the opportunity for collaboration in the energy transition.

The areas identified of mutual interest were waste to energy, carbon capture and hydrogen, the Ministry’s release noted.

High Commissioner Gupta also outlined Canada’s long history in the development and use of hydrogen and noted the potential in Trinidad and Tobago’s energy sector for its development.
