A T&T national wanted in the United States for attempted murder has been extradited to face charges.
Vincent Roberts was handed over to US authorities on Wednesday and transported to New York, where he faces multiple charges, including attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon. If convicted, he could face up to 25 years in prison.
Roberts, a permanent US resident, was initially charged in New York in September 2021. He fled to T&T in December 2022 while on bond awaiting trial. In January 2023, a warrant for his arrest was issued in New York for attempted murder, attempted assault, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. The US government requested his extradition in January 2024, and he was arrested in Laventille on April 17, 2024.
On January 22, Attorney General Reginald Armour signed a warrant, allowing US officials to take custody of Roberts.
The extradition was the result of collaboration between several agencies, including the T&T Police Service, the Central Authority of the Attorney General’s Office, T&T Customs and Immigration, the Airports Authority, US Customs and Border Protection, the US Drug Enforcement Administration, the US Department of Justice Office of International Affairs, the New York City Police Department, and the Kings County District Attorney’s Office.
