The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service says officers seen in a viral video transporting a young woman to graduation a marked vehicle acted lawfully and with authorisation.
Following an internal review led by Assistant Commissioner Wayne Mystar, the TTPS now confirms the officers acted with permission from their station’s commanding officer.
“The circumstances surrounding the engagement were consistent with the TTPS’ Strategic Plan 2025–2027, which identifies Community Partnerships as a foundational strategic pillar in improving public trust and confidence,” the release said.
The clarification comes more than two weeks after Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro first responded to public outcry over footage showing police vehicle PEJ 379 in what appeared to be a non-official setting in the Southern Division.
At the time, Guevarro said he had requested formal reports and urged the public to allow the investigative process to unfold. He also praised citizens who flagged the incident, calling civic vigilance essential to maintaining integrity within the Service.
“These outreach efforts form a critical part of the TTPS’ objective to strengthen relationships with communities, foster transparency and reinforce legitimacy in law enforcement operations. Commissioner of Police, Allister Guevarro, has reviewed the matter and is satisfied that the officers acted within the parameters of the law and displayed professional integrity. He further commends them for serving as ambassadors of the TTPS, demonstrating initiative, respect and commitment to community-based policing.”
The TTPS says it remains committed to balancing operational duties with meaningful community engagement as part of its broader effort to build public trust.
