As Trinidad and Tobago marked its Independence Day Diamond Jubilee yesterday, this country’s national flag and colours were featured in multiple international displays, including the Google Doodle.
There were also displays at the House of Commons and Westminster Abbey in London.
And T&T’s Independence Day was also recognised with a light show at Niagara Falls in Canada last night.
Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Amery Browne posted several updates to his social media account yesterday about the international recognition.
“I directed all our overseas Missions to take steps to ensure that our national colours are displayed at important buildings and locations across the world for our 60th Independence Anniversary. This is our National Flag being flown today atop Westminster Abbey in London. Well done Team!” Browne said in one post.
He also attached a short video and a photo of the T&T flag being flown at Westminster, which is one the UK’s most notable religious buildings and a World Heritage site.
Browne acknowledged the Google Doodle as well.
“Google again recognises Trinidad and Tobago, this time for our Independence Day by conveying our National Flag and a link to information...to device screens all across the globe,” he said.
On July 26, the Google Doodle featured T&T’s national instrument, the steelpan.
The Google Doodle is country-specific, which means it will be different in all countries.
Yesterday’s Doodle enabled users to access several links to information about T&T, with animated fireworks and national flags.
On the Google Doodle site, details of T&T’s Independence Day celebrations were posted.
Browne also celebrated T&T’s flag being flown at the House of Commons, the UK Parliament.
“And today, our National Flag is being flown at the British House of Commons, for the very first time for the Independence Day celebration of Trinidad and Tobago. A special tribute to our twin island nation on our Diamond Jubilee. Thank you to our London team for responding to the call and ensuring these arrangements,” he said.
Those who tuned in were also treated to a spectacular 15-minute light show at Niagara Falls.
The Falls, in Canada, are often lit in special colours for significant dates.
Last night’s light show took place from 10 pm to 10.15 pm.
