Two men from central Trinidad have been fined $5,000 each after admitting to stealing Telecommunications Services of T&T (TSTT) cables late last week.
Keron Ramnanansingh and Daoud Mohammed were fined last Friday after pleading guilty to larceny before Magistrate Adrian Darmanie.
According to the summary of evidence presented during the hearing, the men were arrested last Wednesday after police officers responded to a report of persons cutting cables at Marchin Road in Charlieville around 11.40 pm.
When the officers arrived on the scene, they allegedly saw Ramnanansingh and Mohammed wrapping a length of wire into a coil and placing it next to three other coils on the pavement.
The men attempted to run away upon seeing the police officers but they were intercepted by the officers’ colleagues who were on patrol a short distance away.
After arresting the men, the officers contacted TSTT, whose officials identified the cables, which had a total length of 89 metres and were valued at $11,881.50.
In presenting a mitigation plea on behalf of the duo, their lawyer Bhimal Maharajh noted that the men, who are in their mid-20s and from Charlieville, both had clean criminal records before being charged for the offence. Magistrate Darmanie gave the men three months to pay the fine and ordered that they serve six months in prison if they failed to meet the deadline.
