Two men be­lieved to be mem­bers of the Re­sis­tance Gang were held by po­lice of­fi­cers dur­ing a road-block ex­er­cise along Free­man Road, St Au­gus­tine, on Tues­day night.

A 34-year-old man from Lovers Lane, Ari­ma and a 32-year-old of Gomez Av­enue, Va­len­cia – were held by of­fi­cers un­der Op­er­a­tion Blue Line.

Dur­ing 8 pm and 11:30 pm on Au­gust 28, a rov­ing road check ex­er­cise was car­ried out in Area West of the North Cen­tral Di­vi­sion.

Ini­ti­at­ed by ACP Subero and co­or­di­nat­ed by Snr Supt Ram­phal – the ex­er­cise which in­clud­ed Supt Nor­butt, ASP Ramhar­rack and In­sps High­ly and Greene, con­duct­ed road checks along the East­ern Main Road at Mt D’or, Champs Fleurs; and al­so along the South­ern Main Road, Curepe in the vicin­i­ty of the Churchill Roo­sevelt High­way.

As they moved to Free­man Road, St Au­gus­tine around 10:20 pm and be­gan road checks, a cream Hyundai Elantra with three oc­cu­pants, stopped a short dis­tance away from the road-block and turned around in an at­tempt to dri­ve off.

Sev­er­al of­fi­cers led by Cpl Good­ing gave chase and the ve­hi­cle was sub­se­quent­ly in­ter­cept­ed at Bassie Street, St. Au­gus­tine.

Even be­fore the sus­pect’s ve­hi­cle came to a stop, one of the men opened the door and jumped out.

And al­though sev­er­al search­es were car­ried out in an ef­fort to lo­cate him, they proved fu­tile.

Mean­while, a search of the ve­hi­cle turned up one bul­let proof vest along with a quan­ti­ty of black cloth­ing.

One of the men was found with a Glock 19 se­mi-au­to­mat­ic pis­tol and two mag­a­zines con­tain­ing 28 rounds of 9 mm am­mu­ni­tion; while the oth­er was found with a three rounds of 9 mm am­mu­ni­tion.

They were ar­rest­ed and tak­en to the Tu­na­puna Po­lice Sta­tion where a more com­pre­hen­sive search was con­duct­ed and two 5.56 mm spent cas­ings were dis­cov­ered on the wind­screen fin­ish­er un­der the wipers.

Checks al­so re­vealed the ve­hi­cle bore false reg­is­tra­tion plates.

The Ari­ma sus­pect was charged for dri­ving with­out a dri­ver’s per­mit; dri­ving with­out a cer­tifi­cate of in­sur­ance; and pos­ses­sion of three rounds of am­mu­ni­tion.

The Va­len­cia sus­pect was charged with pos­ses­sion of a firearm; and pos­ses­sion of am­mu­ni­tion.
