Two Venezuelan nationals are in the custody of police officers and members of the T&T Coast Guard (TTCG), following a shootout on the sea south of Trinidad’s borders earlier this week.

Reports indicate that a T&T Coast Guard vessel attempted to intercept a vessel with Venezuelans off the coast of Cedros when they were allegedly fired upon.

During the exchange of gunfire, the vessel made a sharp manoeuvre which caused two men to be thrown overboard.

The vessel escaped but the two men were captured and brought ashore. They were later handed over to police.

The men claimed to be officers of the Venezuelan Guardio de Nacional.

They are currently being questioned.
