With 10 days left before the Local Government Elections, candidates have beefed up their campaign from both the People’s National Movement and the United National Congress in a bid to win the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation.
Candidates can be seen on the hustle in every electoral districts attempting to convince voters ahead of the Local Government Elections carded for August 14.
Both the PNM and UNC candidates are seen busily campaigning in the town of Sangre Grande dressed in their respective party’s colours speaking with shoppers and vendors and listening to problems affecting them.
The PNM candidates led by Roger Monroe, MP For Toco/ Sangre Grande and the UNC led by Jack Warner, who returned to the party along with Khadijah Ameen, Deputy Chair and Anil Roberts among others.
Warner and Ameen joined Neil De Silva, candidate for Valencia and his supporters in their walkabout.
Warner was welcomed by many in the district and convinced those who said they were not going to vote.
His presence in Valencia showed a heavy turnout of supporters covering the street of Valencia with their yellow shirts, jersey and caps.
Warner said in short interview that his aim is to get support for De Silva for him to win the Valencia West seat.
He says his objective is to ensure that the UNC takes control of the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation with a majority.
Warner promised as the election draws closer to join and give support to all UNC candidates in their walkabout.
When Guardian Media spoke to De Silva, he said he very confident that he is going to win come August 14. He says the momentum is building and he is getting tremendous support wherever he walks.
Meanwhile, Monroe, who was seen in Sangre Grande with PNM candidate Alicia Thomas running for Sangre Grande North West and Darrin Buchoon PNM candidate for Sangre Grande South, walked and talked with shoppers and vendors.
The red was visible from a distance as many supporters joined in the campaign for Local Government Elections.
Monroe promised the vendors that there will be conversation with the relevant agents to bring some solution to the vendors, who complained how they are bombarded by the municipal police daily and their goods are forfeited.
He added that selling on the street is an offence but some solution to the vendors selling on the pavement can be derived.
Their walk extended along the Eastern Main Road ending at their office on Cooperative Street, Sangre Grande.
