The Balmain Community Centre was the first of four venues at which free vision screenings will be offered this week, by the Optometry Unit at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of The University of the West Indies (The UWI) St. Augustine Campus, in collaboration with Canadian Vision Care.
A release from The UWI notes that residents of La Vega Gran Couva, Tortuga, Tabaquite, Flanagin Town, and Talparo, will be able to access the screenings and other healthcare services free of charge, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm up to Thursday this week, as a result of the partnership.
“The collaboration between The UWI Optometry Unit and Canadian Vision Care underscores a shared commitment to community health and well-being. By working together, we aim to make a meaningful impact on the lives of individuals and families in Trinidad and Tobago,” The UWI said in a release.
The initiative, which began today at Balmain Community Centre, moves to the Tabaquite Community Centre tomorrow, Tuesday 20 February 2024. On Wednesday, February 21, residents close to the Tortuga Community Centre can access the free services. And on Thursday, February 22, the Tortuga Community Centre will host the free screenings and health services for residents in the area.
“Good vision is essential for overall well-being, productivity, and quality of life. However, many individuals may not have access to adequate eye care services,” the release from The UWI points out.
“Understanding the importance of proactive eye health, The UWI Optometry Unit is committed to reaching out to communities in need, providing essential screenings and raising awareness about eye health,” The UWI explained.
Residents in the targeted communities are invited to attend free screenings for various eye conditions, including diabetes, glaucoma, cataracts, as well as children’s and senior vision screenings. The UWI says in addition to vision screenings, attendees will have the opportunity to receive blood pressure readings to further support their overall health.
“If you or someone you know resides in these areas, we encourage you to take advantage of this invaluable opportunity for eye care,” the release from The UWI said. “Early detection and treatment of eye conditions can significantly improve outcomes and prevent vision loss.”
