A group of ban­dits at­tacked sev­er­al Venezue­lan fam­i­lies in the Waller­field area and burnt their home down af­ter they al­leged­ly got no mon­ey from them dur­ing an at­tempt­ed rob­bery on Thurs­day morn­ing.

The Venezue­lans and their chil­dren—17 fam­i­lies and over 12 chil­dren—are now very fear­ful, as the ban­dits promised to re­turn and kill them.

Guardian Me­dia was told that the ban­dits at­tacked the Venezue­lans and at­tempt­ed to rob them of the earn­ings they make from farm work in the area.

The ban­dits be­came en­raged when they got no mon­ey and al­leged­ly threw gaso­line on the chil­dren and the wood­en struc­ture, which was di­vid­ed in­to five units.

The women and chil­dren were able to run away and hide in the bush­es. How­ev­er, their home was set ablaze and every­thing in it de­stroyed.

The Venezue­lans are now mak­ing an ap­peal for help from the po­lice, who Guardian me­dia was told are seek­ing the ser­vices of a trans­la­tor be­fore they re­turn to the site.

The Venezue­lans are al­so ap­peal­ing for mat­tress­es, clothes, food items and tar­pau­lins to pitch a tent un­til they can get ma­te­r­i­al to re­build. Any­one will­ing to help can con­tact 341-6951.

In an un­re­lat­ed sto­ry, a man who was shot on Fri­day night in Care­nage re­mained hos­pi­talised in a se­ri­ous con­di­tion last night.

Ac­cord­ing to re­ports, the man was stand­ing at Frisco Junc­tion, off Haig Street, when he was ap­proached by a gun­man who opened fire on him.

The man was shot sev­er­al times about the body and was tak­en to the hos­pi­tal by res­i­dents.

Po­lice said the shoot­ing may have been gang re­lat­ed.

In­ves­ti­ga­tions are con­tin­u­ing.
