Former vice president of FIFA Jack Warner laughed off reports yesterday that he was taken into custody by US Marshals.
Several posts on social media sites claimed the former Federation of International Football Association executive was being extradited.
But when contacted yesterday, Warner reminded reporters, “Today is April Fools’!”
Warner, who also held posts as national security minister and work and transport minister under the People’s Partnership government, said he was relaxing quietly with his family. He said he was in good spirits and enjoying the downtime with those closest to him.
Warner was banned for life from football by FIFA following a corruption scandal that embroiled the game’s world governing body in 2015.
In May of that year, he was indicted on 29 corruption charges by US authorities, who requested his extradition after an arrest warrant was issued for him and other FIFA officials.
Warner was one of 14 top FIFA officials and corporate executives to be accused of corruption, fraud and money laundering while he was the FIFA vice president.
Warner was implicated in numerous corruption allegations dating back to the 1980s.
On May 29, 2011 - Warner and Mohammed bin Hammam were provisionally suspended by the FIFA Ethics Committee pending the outcome of the investigation of corruption allegations against them.
