The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) has announced a series of major infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving the reliability of water supply to residents along Trinidad’s North Coast.
In a release issued following a site visit on Saturday 19 July 2025, WASA said upgrades are planned for water production facilities in Rincon, Tyrico, Las Cuevas and La Fillette, with a new plant to be constructed in Blanchisseuse.
These works, the Authority said, will help shift communities from the current 24/2 supply schedule to a more consistent 24/5 service. The long-term goal is to provide a full 24/7 supply across the Maracas Region.
Saturday’s visit formed part of WASA’s nationwide infrastructure assessment and was led by Acting CEO Jeevan Joseph and the Executive Evolution Team. According to the release, the initiative is evaluating infrastructure and service delivery challenges with the goal of improving both water and wastewater management.
Joseph, along with members of the Board of Commissioners—Indra Mohammed, Patricia Herry, and Tawari Tota-Maharaj—inspected facilities and spoke with residents of Old Maracas Road and the Maracas Bay Fishing Village.
Among the projects listed:
Rehabilitation of the Tyrico Water Treatment Plant, including new clear well storage and raw water intake upgrades.
Construction of a new treatment facility at Rincon with transmission lines to expand distribution.
Renovation of the Las Cuevas and La Fillette plants, including new raw water intakes and an additional well at La Fillette.
The release also quoted the President of the Maracas Bay Village Council, Sharon Joseph, who thanked the Authority for engaging with the community directly.
WASA said these efforts are in keeping with the Government’s mandate and represent a shift toward becoming a more responsive and customer-focused utility.
