Trinidad and Tobago was rocked by several shootings over a 24-hour period, leaving four men dead in separate incidents across the country.
In El Socorro, San Juan, pensioner Gobin Deonarine, 76, was shot several times on the pavement in front of his home at Persad Lane around 1.20 am while playing cards with relatives and neighbours.
A gunman reportedly rode past on a bicycle and opened fire on the group.
Deonarine collapsed on the pavement and was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival at 1.30 am.
In another incident, at around 12.45 pm, police were alerted to a man’s body spotted in the river near Morvant Junction by officers from the Transit Unit.
In Tarouba, 40-year-old Gary Griffith, who carries the same name as the former commissioner, was shot dead around 10.55 pm on Tuesday night at Derek Murray Drive, close to his home.
An anonymous informant called the E999 Police Command Centre after hearing a gunshot.
According to police, a white Nissan Tiida pulled alongside Griffith as he walked, and its occupants fired multiple shots before fleeing.
Three spent 9mm casings were recovered at the scene. Griffith was transported to San Fernando General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11.29 pm.
Investigators from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region 3 are probing the incident.
Meanwhile, in Laventille, 47-year-old Shawn McLean was killed around 8.55 pm on Upper Wharton Street as he returned home from buying groceries.
McLean was found slumped over the steering wheel of his black Kia Rio, which had crashed into a wall. He was shot multiple times.
Investigators recovered 18 spent 9mm and 12 spent 5.56mm shell casings at the scene.
McLean had previously served time for a manslaughter conviction in the 2009 killing of America Leverne Lyons, but had been released early last year after serving part of his sentence.
Lyons, 30, of Oakland, California, was liming with relatives when an argument reportedly broke out involving McLean and his sister.
McLean later returned to the area armed with a firearm and shot Lyons several times before fleeing.
The incident was witnessed by an off-duty police officer who followed McLean and his sister as they escaped.
Both were arrested shortly after along Richmond Street, and the firearm used in the killing was recovered.
McLean was identified by multiple eyewitnesses and was found to have gunshot residue on his hands.
Although initially charged with murder, McLean was allowed to plead guilty to manslaughter under a plea agreement with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
In Tobago, police said 26-year-old Jerome Woods of King Street, Delaford, was found dead yesterday morning inside a room, bleeding from multiple gunshot wounds.
Woods was a sanitation worker attached to the Division of Health, Tobago House of Assembly. Police said investigations are ongoing and a motive has not been determined.
This murder brings Tobago’s toll to ten for 2025, compared to 26 in 2024—most of them being firearm-related.
The spate of shootings within the last 24 hours has left residents in shock.
