PNM Tobago East candidate Ayanna Webster-Roy is warning Tobagonians that a UNC victory in the upcoming general election would spell disaster for the country, saying, “we all stand to lose — and lose big.”
In a fiery address at a political meeting in Charlotteville, Webster-Roy told constituents that a UNC-led government would drive up the cost of living, eliminate food support, and leave Tobago’s most vulnerable citizens behind.
“If the UNC wins, all of Trinidad and Tobago loses. If the UNC wins, our economy and national pride will decline. If the UNC wins, it is our children who will suffer,” she declared.
Webster-Roy warned that irresponsible economic policies from the UNC could push the country into the arms of the IMF, resulting in deep cuts to social programs.
“The over $15 million in food support to 10,441 Tobagonians—gone.
The $503 million paid to senior citizens in Tobago from 2015 to 2025—gone.
The $68 million in public assistance—gone.
The $85 million in disability grants—gone.
And the $8.5 million to support children with disabilities—gone.”
She added: “The first thing the IMF will do is cut social sector spending. So if the UNC wins, picture this: your food card—gone.”
Pushing back on opposition criticism that MPs should be more vocal in Parliament, Webster-Roy emphasized that effective representation comes through diplomacy and relationship-building.
“Parliament is no place to make noise and fight. You catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Since 2015, I’ve been using my charm, my quiet disposition, and my ability to build relationships to bring real development to Tobago East.”
She also promised greater support for families, including removing VAT from school uniforms and textbooks, increasing food card allocations, and reviewing the means test to better support vulnerable households.
Additionally, she pledged that a future PNM government would work with NGOs to establish a safe house in Tobago for women and children affected by domestic violence, and introduce virtual doctor visits for the elderly.
“We are putting our senior citizens at the heart of our service delivery. And when we return to government, we will remove taxes from public sector pensions.”
Webster-Roy closed with a call to action, urging Tobagonians to reject complacency and show up on April 28.
“Despite the walk, despite the talk, the only way I can remain your humble servant is if you go out on election day and bring in the votes.”
