There are reports that the relatives of a 28-year-old father of one have demanded a full-scale investigation after he died at Paria’s Point-a-Pierre facilities yesterday.
The man has been identified as Shaquile Douglas, a welder from Princes Town.
According to the Paria Fuel Trading Company in a statement yesterday evening, contractor Shaquile Douglas died suddenly yesterday morning at Paria’s facilities in Pointe-a-Pierre, after complaining of feeling unwell.
Paria said at approximately 10.45 am, Paria’s Health, Safety and Environment Department was informed that the contract employee, of Sonny Beharrysingh and Sons, was working on a seven-foot scaffolding structure at Paria’s facilities when he asked to take a break from the work.
Paria said Douglas’ colleagues, realising he was feeling unwell and in medical difficulty, contacted Paria’s HSE department. EMT officers were immediately summoned and operations at the site were suspended.
The company said when the EMT officers examined Douglas he was unresponsive and all efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Paria said another attempt was made to revive Douglas by the Fire Service when they arrived but he remained unresponsive. It added the police and District Medical Officer (DMO) were called in and at 1.10 pm, Douglas was pronounced dead.
Both Beharrysingh and Paria’s general manager, Mushtaq Mohammed, met with Douglas’ relatives to offer support to the family.
This incident comes eight months after the deaths of four divers who were sucked in and stuck inside a 36-inch pipeline off Paria’s facility in Pointe-a-Pierre in February. A fifth diver managed to survive the ordeal.
Their deaths and tragic circumstances are now the subjects of a Commission of Enquiry being led by King’s Counsel Jerome Lynch.
