A woman from Diego Mar­tin was ar­rest­ed by po­lice short­ly af­ter knock­ing down a man on Ari­api­ta Av­enue in Wood­brook and dri­ving away ear­ly yes­ter­day morn­ing.

Po­lice said the hit-and-run ac­ci­dent oc­curred around 4.10 am near Ana Street.

The 40-year-old vic­tim from Dibe Road, Long Cir­cu­lar, St James was cross­ing the road when he was struck by a Hon­da Vezel that was head­ing west.

The dri­ver did not stop to ren­der as­sis­tance.

CCTV footage of the ac­ci­dent was sub­se­quent­ly shared on so­cial me­dia.

The in­ci­dent was al­leged­ly wit­nessed by po­lice of­fi­cers, who were on mo­bile pa­trol and chased af­ter the ve­hi­cle.

The dri­ver was stopped at the in­ter­sec­tion of the Mar­aval Park­way and the Au­drey Jef­fers High­way and tak­en to the St James Po­lice Sta­tion.

The vic­tim was tak­en to the Port-of-Spain Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal, where he re­mained in sta­ble con­di­tion up to late yes­ter­day.

Fam­i­ly robbed af­ter movie out­ing

A fam­i­ly to Movi­eTowne in Port-of-Spain turned dis­tress­ing when a woman and her rel­a­tives were robbed out­side the pop­u­lar en­ter­tain­ment venue on Sat­ur­day. 

The vic­tim, iden­ti­fied as Mari­ka, shared her ex­pe­ri­ence on so­cial me­dia, prompt­ing pub­lic con­cern about safe­ty around high-traf­fic ar­eas.

Mari­ka ex­plained that she was leav­ing Movi­eTowne with her moth­er, five-year-old son, and two young nieces when they no­ticed some­one fol­low­ing them to­ward their ve­hi­cle. As they at­tempt­ed to en­ter their car, the woman said the in­di­vid­ual ap­proached and force­ful­ly took valu­ables from both Mari­ka and her moth­er. Mari­ka de­scribed the sit­u­a­tion as over­whelm­ing, not­ing that her son and nieces were deeply fright­ened by the in­ci­dent.

The fam­i­ly im­me­di­ate­ly sought help from near­by po­lice of­fi­cers, who searched for the sus­pects to no avail.

Movi­eTowne’s own­er, Derek Chin, clar­i­fied that the in­ci­dent oc­curred on the link road near the es­tab­lish­ment, not with­in the Movi­eTowne com­pound. Chin reaf­firmed the com­pa­ny’s com­mit­ment to pa­tron safe­ty, cit­ing its track record of man­ag­ing large crowds with min­i­mal in­ci­dents.

“Both our Port-of-Spain and C3 lo­ca­tions have suc­cess­ful­ly pro­vid­ed safe spaces for fam­i­lies, even dur­ing busy pe­ri­ods,” Chin said. “Our se­cu­ri­ty team, in­clud­ing many for­mer po­lice of­fi­cers, works dili­gent­ly un­der chal­leng­ing con­di­tions.”

Chin al­so called for greater po­lice pres­ence in high-traf­fic ar­eas, urg­ing au­thor­i­ties to ad­dress broad­er con­cerns about pub­lic safe­ty.

“Pro­tect­ing our youth and fam­i­lies is crit­i­cal,” he said.
