Women’s health doctor, Dr. Adesh Sirjusingh, is the recipient of an Anthony N. Sabga Award, Caribbean Excellence for Public & Civic Contributions.
Awards’ Progamme Director, Maria Neilson, confirmed today that Dr. Sirjusingh and two other 2023 Laureates will each receive TT$500,000 in recognition and support of their work at a gala ceremony in Trinidad, in June 2023.
The other 2023 Excellence Laureates are author Joanne Hillhouse of Antigua, and agri-researcher Dr. Mahendra Persaud of Guyana.
An official statement issued by the Awards’ Programme notes that Dr Sirjusingh is best known for leading major improvements in maternal and infant mortality rates in T&T’s public health system.
“It is estimated that due to the policies implemented during his tenure, the lives of at least 80-100 babies and 6-8 mothers are saved annually in T&T,” the Awards Programme’s release noted.
It added: “Dr. Sirjusingh, who has worked in the public system for over 30 years, also transformed the Sangre Grande Hospital into a modern facility, offering specialist 24/7 care to women. Having grown up in rural Trinidad, he also finds time to hold free clinics for the people of the area where he spent his childhood, often volunteering at community health fairs. He has produced countless brochures and pamphlets to educate women on their clinical conditions.”
The 55-year-old obstetrician/gynaecologist currently is the Director of Women’s Health at the Ministry of Health.
The Anthony N. Sabga Awards, Caribbean Excellence have been awarded to Caribbean nationals who excel in the fields of Arts & Letters, Entrepreneurship, Public & Civic Contributions and Science & Technology, since 2006.
“This year’s three Laureates join a distinguished college of 57 awardees from across the Caribbean,” the release observed.
