A female police constable who attacked a pupil at a school in Port-of-Spain has been charged with assault by beating of a minor.
This follows several months of investigations into the incident on May 7, in which the 11-year-old victim was reportedly assaulted by the officer, who is the mother of another pupil attending the same school.
According to reports, there was an altercation between the two pupils, after which the officer allegedly confronted and physically assaulted the other child.
A teacher then intervened and brought the incident to an end.
The victim was taken for medical attention, and a report was made to the Professional Standards Bureau, prompting an investigation under the direction of Deputy Police Commissioner of Intelligence and Investigations, Natasha George.
The instruction to lay the charge followed consultation with the acting Director of Public Prosecutions, Sabrina Dougdeen-Jaglal, who advised that the officer be charged by way of summons for the offence.
The accused appeared before Magistrate Marisa Gomez in the Port-of-Spain Third Magistrates’ Court on November 11, following which the matter was adjourned to November 21.
The T&T Police Service yesterday reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and accountability among all its members.
