To­day we hear from stu­dent Flo­rence as she shares the sto­ry of her jour­ney with AL­TA and how it has trans­formed her life.

More than four months ago, I de­cid­ed that I want­ed to join an AL­TA class. Af­ter hear­ing my good friend Deanne talk about this AL­TA class, it sound­ed in­ter­est­ing be­cause I love to read but spelling and pro­nounc­ing big words is some­what of a chal­lenge for me. The de­scrip­tion she gave of AL­TA suit­ed me just right. The class is free and I didn’t need any more en­cour­age­ment, so on that to­day I signed up and was ac­cept­ed.

That first day I felt anx­ious, as the time drew near­er for my first AL­TA class to be­gin. I was very ex­cit­ed to be par­tic­i­pat­ing in an on­line class for the very first time in my life. I was cu­ri­ous to meet the tu­tors and oth­er stu­dents. I am thank­ful there is no fee to pay for this class. I don’t have to sit in a noisy class­room, and the in­for­ma­tion I re­ceived in AL­TA class is de­signed to help per­sons who have prob­lems with their read­ing, spelling and writ­ing.

My jour­ney with AL­TA be­gan on Sep­tem­ber 5, 2025 and as the to­days be­came to­mor­rows, I felt more com­fort­able with my tu­tors and class­mates. These AL­TA tu­tors make learn­ing fun. The word phon­ics put a fear in me since I have no knowl­edge of this strange sub­ject but as to­day turns in­to to­mor­row, I am learn­ing how to sound out my words and how to spell my phon­ic sounds. I am very hap­py I joined AL­TA and grate­ful for the de­vot­ed tu­tors.

Some of the things I did to help im­prove my read­ing were buy­ing the news­pa­pers on a dai­ly ba­sis and read­ing every sin­gle page, bor­row­ing sto­ry books from my nieces and nephews and read­ing road signs when trav­el­ling.

Af­ter many to­mor­rows, I am now more con­fi­dent in my­self with my read­ing, spelling and writ­ing. When called up­on to read in church or any oth­er place, I do so with plea­sure know­ing that with the help of AL­TA pro­grammes I am not afraid to read for oth­ers to hear.

As to­mor­row rolls in­to to­day I feel much bet­ter about my­self and no longer look down on oth­ers who are fac­ing dif­fi­cul­ties with read­ing and writ­ing, I try my best to as­sist wher­ev­er nec­es­sary.

There are many to­mor­rows to come as I con­tin­ue my class­es with AL­TA, build­ing my self con­fi­dence with my read­ing, writ­ing and spelling abil­i­ties. I will try to be reg­u­lar re­gard­less of my sit­u­a­tion for every class is a new be­gin­ning, some­thing of great im­por­tance.

To get to my “a lot to­mor­row” I will pay at­ten­tion to every­thing that is be­ing taught by the ded­i­cat­ed tu­tors of AL­TA. My goal is to com­plete the AL­TA class­es, and I am look­ing for­ward to writ­ing the CXC ex­am­i­na­tions in Eng­lish Lan­guage and ob­tain­ing a Grade One. I will al­so spread the mes­sage of the im­por­tance of AL­TA to my fam­i­ly mem­bers, friends and the peo­ple in my com­mu­ni­ty so they can al­so ben­e­fit from AL­TA pro­grammes mak­ing their lit­tle to­day a lot to­mor­row as my­self.
