Today we hear from student Florence as she shares the story of her journey with ALTA and how it has transformed her life.
More than four months ago, I decided that I wanted to join an ALTA class. After hearing my good friend Deanne talk about this ALTA class, it sounded interesting because I love to read but spelling and pronouncing big words is somewhat of a challenge for me. The description she gave of ALTA suited me just right. The class is free and I didn’t need any more encouragement, so on that today I signed up and was accepted.
That first day I felt anxious, as the time drew nearer for my first ALTA class to begin. I was very excited to be participating in an online class for the very first time in my life. I was curious to meet the tutors and other students. I am thankful there is no fee to pay for this class. I don’t have to sit in a noisy classroom, and the information I received in ALTA class is designed to help persons who have problems with their reading, spelling and writing.
My journey with ALTA began on September 5, 2025 and as the todays became tomorrows, I felt more comfortable with my tutors and classmates. These ALTA tutors make learning fun. The word phonics put a fear in me since I have no knowledge of this strange subject but as today turns into tomorrow, I am learning how to sound out my words and how to spell my phonic sounds. I am very happy I joined ALTA and grateful for the devoted tutors.
Some of the things I did to help improve my reading were buying the newspapers on a daily basis and reading every single page, borrowing story books from my nieces and nephews and reading road signs when travelling.
After many tomorrows, I am now more confident in myself with my reading, spelling and writing. When called upon to read in church or any other place, I do so with pleasure knowing that with the help of ALTA programmes I am not afraid to read for others to hear.
As tomorrow rolls into today I feel much better about myself and no longer look down on others who are facing difficulties with reading and writing, I try my best to assist wherever necessary.
There are many tomorrows to come as I continue my classes with ALTA, building my self confidence with my reading, writing and spelling abilities. I will try to be regular regardless of my situation for every class is a new beginning, something of great importance.
To get to my “a lot tomorrow” I will pay attention to everything that is being taught by the dedicated tutors of ALTA. My goal is to complete the ALTA classes, and I am looking forward to writing the CXC examinations in English Language and obtaining a Grade One. I will also spread the message of the importance of ALTA to my family members, friends and the people in my community so they can also benefit from ALTA programmes making their little today a lot tomorrow as myself.
