Tuesday’s US midterm elections, the results and ripple effects were so far reaching that CNN subsequently themed its coverage ”Election Week in America,” not just “Election Night in America.”
Events have been significant enough to obtain a response from Prime Minister Kamla Persad—Bissessar, amid whatever caused the cancellation of her participation at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua—the only CHOGM in this region during her term as PM.
And there’s much for the United National Congress administration to contemplate from the US outcomes, which caused as much upheaval there as Republican President Donald Trump has so far caused globally in his two—year tenure.
The cost borne by Americans of Trump’s management in “Making America Great Again” was what did the Republicans in. Cost of living. Fuel costs post—Iran war. Cost of a security plan degenerated to ICE against people. Cost of America’s plummeting global stocks. By Tuesday, Americans were done. And so were the Republicans.
The stinging backhand dealt to the Trump profile has produced a book of political firsts for the Democrats. And the message handed to Republicans (along with their battered profile) harked back to a Trump favourite: FAFO.
Outcomes will change the United States’ future as Democrats pursue keeping their promises on the economy and perceived corruption, securing passage to the 2028 Presidential elections. Politically wounded to “lame duck” presidency status by the Democrats’ control o Congress, Trump’s modus operandi now dictates the Republicans’ 2028 chances. Presidential hopefuls have already arisen—some falling due to Trump’s shadow around them.
And that shadow’s retained around Persad—Bissessar’s administration, particularly after headlining that she “Stands by Trump.” What that brings T&T from the Democrats is to unfold. But Tuesday’s events are instructive for Government, which parroted Trump’s playbook — from security actions and division to bombastic statements.
The PM’s correct assessment of Americans’ reasons for booting out the Republicans, and that voters in each country respond to their national circumstances, didn’t acknowledge that the “bread—and—butter issues” she cited in America are the same in T&T. More pressing now due to her Government’s actions, a flat economy and curtailed spending; the latest manifestation of which was the low business at Divali Nagar
Americans on Tuesday rejected not only candidates Trump selected, but also his US$5,000 offer to adults if Republicans won, the administration’s data centre thrust and “redistricting” —gerrymandering—of seats. Government’s US data centre projects and changes to LG seats are expected to be among T&T’s 2027 Local Government election issues.
Persad—Bissessar’s statements signal she hasn’t disengaged from Trump support, but (like Trump) she has the ability to shift.
The current scenario will pit Republicans and Democrats against each other—harder—to reach common ground amid Trump’s veto powers and his continued control of US foreign policy, including tariffs.
US reports say Democrats can contest finances, will head Congressional teams and, via Senate members, decide on confirmation of Trump’s nominees to national security and diplomatic posts.
Nominee for US Ambassador to T&T, Jennifer Johnson—Carroll is awaiting final Senate confirmation following July hearing. The Democrats—controlled Congress enters in January.
A well—placed energy/geopolitical source, who’s worked with both US administrations, said, “Many changes will sweep through Washington. Persons who the UNC may have had conversations with, may no longer be around. It’s ahead if changes affect energy deals Government’s banking on in 2027. These are driven by multi—national oil/gas companies, especially Shell and BP. Government has no say. Just because things work out for those companies doesn’t mean it’s good for T&T.”
Seeking T&T’s input, Ministers Roodal Moonilal and Sean Sobers will visit Venezuela counterparts within the next few weeks, it was confirmed yesterday.
As per Democrats’ concerns on the Trump administration’s kinetic strikes on alleged drug boats killing occupants—including two T&T nationals—a probe is expected. Based on what investigations reveal and especially the two nationals’ case in US courts, the Government’s Trump—aligned image could suffer.
Government, as part of Trump’s Americas Counter Cartel Coalition, will watch for changes to his “Donroe Doctrine” (corollary to the Monroe Doctrine) interpretation of foreign policy principles in the Americas. And watching the horizon, it’s ahead if Government engages strategic posture (“cheap ambiguity”) to expand partners beyond the new US landscape.
