Students from four schools in the Maraval area will undergo ten weeks of coaching starting this Friday at the St Mary’s ground in Serpentine Road, St Clair.
The Rotary Club of Maraval who are spearheading the clinics, launched the programme at the St Mary’s venue on Tuesday.
Coordinator of the programme, Davindra Maharaj explained that on each day, the students from Boissere RC, Maraval, Paramin and La Seiva primary schools will be coached on different aspects of batting for example: batting grip, the stance, back lifts, and actually how to look at the ball coming onto the bat.
Some of the bowling coaching will include pace bowling techniques, swinging the ball, how to hold the different balls for different ways of moving the ball and grip for paces and spin.
The students will have an opportunity to showcase what they learnt over the ten-week period as Maharaj explained the activities that will await them at the conclusion of the ten weeks.
“At the end of the entire session,” Maharaj said, “there's going to be a quadrangular series between the schools. So that would be a one-day programme which is yet to be put together, and then it will test the schools.”
District Governor of the Rotary, Vincentian Brian Glasgow, cite the importance of teamwork, saying: “Even with the best batsman in the world if the batsman at the other end does not support, he will get run out.”
Boasting that he shares a name with former West Indies captain Brian Lara, Glasgow said even with all the talent, “Without discipline, there will be no Brian Lara.”
The clinic will commence this Friday and will take place over the next 10 weeks, one session a week before the schools take part in a one-day series to showcase their talents.
