T&T’s sprint star Michelle-Lee Ahye of Memphis Pioneers and Revell Webster of Concorde Athletics Club sped to victory in the respective women’s and men’s Open 100-metre events at the Abilene Wildcats Deon Lendore Classic, held at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, Port-of-Spain, on Saturday.
During session one, Ahye crossed the line in 11.43 seconds to win the women’s dash, finishing ahead of the host club’s Kadija Pickering (11.62) and IG Fastlane’s Akala Melville (12.27), who placed second and third, respectively.
In the men’s version of the race, Webster clocked 10.50 to comfortably take first place ahead of Jeremiah St John of Elite Champion Performance, who claimed second in 10.60, and third-placed Timothy Frederick of Simplex in 10.69.
Respective 100m runners-up Pickering and St John found redemption and success in the 200m during the evening session. Pickering clocked 23.96 to ease to victory ahead of Angel Cumberbatch (Stallions Athletics Running Club) in 25.12 and Akala Melville (IG Fastlane) in third with 25.64. Meanwhile, St John reached the top of the podium with a 21.34-second clocking. In second place was Samuel Stewart (21.53) of Burnley, followed by Elijah Joseph (21.66) of Mounting Eagles in third.
Kaseem Duverney was exceptional on the day. Not only was he among several runners to complete a sprint double, but he actually nabbed a treble in the boys’ Under-13 category. In the morning session, the Cougars athlete stopped the clock at 12.55 to easily win the 100m ahead of Perseverance Titans’ Kayden Victor (13.33) and Stallions’ Nikosi Baptiste (13.58). He next sped to victory in the 400m in 1:01.77, finishing just ahead of Victor (1:01.78) and third-placed Zevon Phillip (Adrenaline Ducks) in 1:01.87. The trio filled the exact same podium spots in the 200m, with Duverney winning in 25.53, Victor second in 26.49, and Phillip third in 26.71.
The other athletes securing sprint doubles were Alex Seepersad (Phoenix Athletics) and Joshua Solomon (Simplex) in the boys’ U-20 and U-15 categories, respectively. Among the girls, doubles went to Kelis Alexander (Neon Wolves) in the U-17s, Keniah Tommy (ZC Athletics) in the U-15s, and Naomi Phillip (Cougars) in the U-13s. Kayla Charles (Abilene) also picked up double gold in the girls’ U-20 200m and 400m events. Solomon capped off his impressive day by bagging a bronze medal in the boys’ 4x100m relay for Simplex, finishing behind winners Cougars and runners-up Track Blazers of Presentation College.
