Dr Avind Ali and Sheris Rampersad captured the title at the Women in Action for the Needy and Destitute (WAND) Foundation's first-ever charity golf tournament on Sunday at the Pointe-a-Pierre Gold Club in San Fernando.
Aptly named “Hole in WAND”, 80 golfers teed off for an 18-hole competition. Despite the heat, the players’ spirits remained high as they vied for victory, followed by a delightful meal and an exciting prize-giving ceremony and raffle.
Dr. Ali and Rampersad took home the first prize which included a Home Sleep Test from ISD Health Solutions and an Electric Food Grill. Using Stableford scoring points, the pair scored 43. Kevesh Ramnath and Sherry-Anne Fortune came in second with a score of 42, each winning a 32” JVC TV from Pricesmart and a tool kit from Dumore.
In third place was the pair of Justine Balgaroo and Ross Ramkisoon also with a score of 42. They each received a pair of sports sunglasses from Look Optical.
WAND Foundation board member and tournament director, Lorraine Ferguson, said, "We are thrilled at the tremendous success of our very first golf tournament." The WAND Foundation relies entirely on charitable donations. Ferguson added, "The amazing support from our participants and sponsors made this event truly memorable, and we are grateful for their generosity."
All proceeds from this year’s “Hole in WAND” golf tournament will be donated to the Shelter for Battered Women and Children, a cause close to WAND Foundation’s mission of supporting vulnerable citizens, particularly women, children and the elderly in T&T.
For the last 25 years, the WAND Foundation has been raising funds to aid projects aligned with its mission. Some of the recent initiatives since 2020 include Horses Helping Humans, The Heights of Aripo RC School and Community Collaboration Project, Covid feeding program, Laventille/East POS Empowerment project, Adopt a School Program, St. Vincent de Paul, Beausejour Community Centre and Learning is For Everyone (LIFE).
