Aruba’s pair of Frederick and Patrick Sydow kept them well on course for one of two top spots in group B of the 2022 Davis Cup by Rakuten, Americas Group IV match at the National Racquet Centre (NRC) in Tacarigua yesterday.

Three days after whipping the T&T team 3-0 in their opening game the Sydow siblings returned to the court to pull off a similar 3-0 win over the United States Virgin Islands (USVI). Led in the opening rubber by Frederick Sydow, the Arubans jumped out front courtesy of a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over USVI’s Finlay Miller.

And later, they sew up the win when Patrick Sydow came from behind to complete a gutsy victory 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 over Tomas Del Olmo in the second singles.

Still, the Arubans were far from the finish, the Sydow siblings returning to the court to destroy the USVI pair of Tomas Del Olmo and his brother Luca Del Olmo 6-2, 6-1 in the doubles.

Meanwhile, there was also a victory for Cuba over Nicaragua 2-1. The Cubans drew first blood when Osmei Rivera defeated Francisco Bendana 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. However, Joaquin Guilleme pulled off a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 victory to level the series.

But in the doubles that followed the Cuban team of Yoan Perez and Rivera sealed the win by beating the pair of Bendana and Luis Marquez 7-6(4), 6-3 in the doubles.

The T&T quartet of Joseph Cadogan, Ebolum Nwokolo, Akile Duke and Nabeel Mohammed who had an off-day yesterday will return to action this morning with a crucial clash against Nicaragua, needing to win to stay alive in the tournament.
