BASSETERRE – A cohesive bowling performance powered Bangladesh Women to a 60-run victory over the West Indies, levelling their One-Day International (ODI) series in a low-scoring clash at Warner Park, St Kitts, on Tuesday.
After being sent in to bat, Bangladesh struggled to post 184 in 48.5 overs, with captain Nigar Sultana anchoring the innings with a gritty 68. Despite the modest target, Bangladesh’s bowlers responded emphatically, dismissing the West Indies for a paltry 124.
Nigar’s innings featured five boundaries and proved vital in keeping her team in the contest. Contributions from Sobhana Mostary (23), Shorna Akhter (21), and Fargana Hoque (18) supported the captain’s effort.
However, the West Indies bowlers, led by Karishma Ramharack (4-33) and Aliyah Alleyne (3-24), kept the pressure on.
Alleyne struck early, removing opener Murshida Khatun for 12, and received support from Deandra Dottin, who dismissed Fargana for 18. Afy Fletcher added to the early woes, trapping Sharmin Akhter for 11 to leave Bangladesh wobbling at 56-3.
Despite the setbacks, Nigar remained resolute, reaching her half-century off 120 deliveries. Her dismissal to Alleyne marked the beginning of the end for the visitors’ innings, with the tail folded soon after.
In reply, the West Indies began tentatively, losing Qiana Joseph for six. Hayley Matthews and Shemaine Campbelle looked poised to rebuild, but a rain interruption shifted the momentum.
Campbelle’s 28 and Cherry-Ann Fraser’s unbeaten 18 were the only notable contributions as the hosts’ innings unravelled in just 35 overs.
Matthews, who had starred with an unbeaten 104 in the previous match, managed only 16, while Alleyne added 15 before falling victim to Bangladesh’s relentless attack. Nahida Akter starred with the ball bagging 3-31.
