Tyrico Redman-Bellamy and Jamarco Johnson scored two goals each as Barbados made it two wins from as many matches with a straightforward 7-1 hammering of Sint Martin in the opening match of a Group A double-header in the Concacaf Under-17 Men’s Qualifiers on Saturday.
Playing at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, the Barbadians, who stunned host T&T 1-0 on Tuesday’s opening night thanks to a 75th-minute effort from Adam King, went ahead as early as the first minute through Jemari Henry.
Tyrico Redman-Bellamy doubled the advantage for the Barbadians in the 16th minute, and three minutes later, Johnson scored his first from the penalty spot, beating goalkeeper Aiden James.
Ashaun Grecia then made it 4-0 in the 31st minute, quickly followed by a second for Redman-Bellamy in the 33rd minute for a commanding 5-0 cushion at half-time.
On the resumption, it was just a matter of how much more the Barbadians would get, but against the run of play, Sint Martin managed to score their first goal in three matches when substitute Jamaly Fontenelle, who replaced Deion Pantophlet, found the back of the net in the 61st minute, beating Kaliq Lashley in goal for Barbados, as they conceded their first goal of the tournament as well.
Barbados eventually resumed their onslaught, with Reuben Garnes-Alleyne getting their sixth item in the 64th minute before Johnson completed his double five minutes.
Despite the lopsided scoreline, Sint Martin players kept at their task and managed to keep the Barbadians scoreless for the final 26 minutes of the match, while the Barbadians ended the match with ten players after right-back Shakari Scott, who was introduced at the interval for Amari Small, was issued a second yellow card by referee Eric De La Cruz after first being cautioned in the 53rd.
Last night, Mexico, the group favourites and winners of their lone match to date, 10-0 over Sint Maarten on Thursday, faced Saint Martin.
Group A action resumes tomorrow (Monday, February 9) with another double-header featuring host T&T, 1-0 winners over Saint Martin on Thursday last, and Sint Maarten from 4 pm, followed by a top-of-the-table clash between Barbados and Mexico from 7 pm.
In the final match on Thursday, February 12, Saint Martin plays Barbados from 4 pm, followed by Mexico vs T&T three hours later.
At the end of the round-robin group series, only the group winner will advance to the FIFA Under-17 World Cup to be held in Qatar in November.
