Shaniqua Bascombe

Junior Sportswoman of the Year of 2018 and 2019 and the Carifta 200 metres Under-17 champion, Shaniqua Bascombe, will make her eagerly-awaited appearance today in section two of the U-20 Girls 100 metres event at the NGC NAAA track and field series.

The fifth meet of the series will take place today at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port-of-Spain, from 10 am

Some 48 events will be contested with many athletes aiming at getting under the qualifying standard for the Carifta Games scheduled for Bermuda August 13-15 and the Olympics Games from July 23 -August 8.

Bascombe, who was injured and also had a broken left hand, has recovered fully and is expected to excel on her comeback run in the U-20 category. However, she needs to run under 11.80 seconds to address the selectors. Her sternest challenges will come from Kyah La Fortune of Simplex and Chimika Prescott of Concorde Athletic Club.

Carifta sprint gold medallist Devin Augustine of Point Fortin New Jets (PFNJ) is improving and will be difficult to peg back over the same distance in the U-20 Boys category.

Augustine was impressive when last seen and it will take an exceptional performance from Kern Cedeno of FAS or Ayele Joseph of MAP to lower his colours.

Olympian Rondell Sorrillo will make an appearance in the men's 100 metres event. Sorrillo of La Brea Athletics will be pressed by Nathan Farinha and Dominic Cole of Abilene Wildcats.

The U-17 Boys 100m event looks to have some very interesting talent and with only two athletes getting under the required NAAA standard of 11.10 many will be seeking to do just that. In heat one, Nicholas Bobb of Cougars looks set to make a big impression and is well fancied to upstage Caleb Alfred of Tobago Falcons and Daniel John of Burnley Athletics.

In section three of the event, it looks to be a "Battle Royale" between Jordan Noel of Cougars, Enoch Joseph of Mounting Eagles and Hakeem Chinapoo of Simplex.

In the Girls U-17 category, Janae DeGannes of Concorde will throw down the gauntlet to two tough rivals in reigning champion Janika Jordan of Cougars and Kaziah Peters of Simplex.

In the U-20 Boys 400m, several young stars will be on parade as Avindale Smith and Shakeem McKay of Abilene will battle for honours with Jordan Pope of Concorde, Malachi Haywood of PFNJ and Ethan Forde of Cougars.
