Bishop Anstey High School and Queen’s Royal College (QRC) were crowned girls and boys’ champions of the Trinbago Schools Relays at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, Port-of-Spain on January 18.
Bishop Anstey girls ended the day with 136 points, 40 points clear of second place Roxborough Secondary. Barroullie Secondary of St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) ended in third spot (72) to deny Toco Secondary (70) a place on the podium. St Lucia’s Sports Academy (44) was in fifth while Tunapuna Secondary, St Joseph’s Convent Port-of-Spain and Hydel High of Jamaica were tied for sixth with 40 points. Hydel, the reigning Jamaican Girls High Schools champion, only contested two races (Girls’ 17 and over 4x100m and 4x400m relays).
The Bishop Anstey team, captained by Naomi Pierce, won the girls’ Under-17 4x60m shuttle hurdles thanks to a strong anchor leg by 2022 Carifta silver medallist Tenique Vincent. The winners were also victorious in the girls’ U-17 4x400m event and were runners-up in the girls’ U-15 4x60m hurdles, 4x100m and 4x100m events. The Hillarians also went home with bronze medals in the girls’ U-17 4x100m and 4x200m disciplines.
Second-placed Roxborough Secondary secured gold in the girls’ 17 and over 4x60m shuttle hurdles, silver in the girls’ U-15 4x60m shuttle hurdles and bronze in the girls’ 17 and over 4x400m.
Barrioualle won the girls’ U-15 4x400m, girls’ U-17 4x200m and Girls Open 4x800m.
Tunapuna were the winner in the girls’ U-15 4x100m and 4x400m while St Joseph’s Convent Port-of-Spain (Girls’ U-15 4x400m), Holy Faith Convent Penal (Girls’ U17 4x100m) and Princess Maraget Secondary of Antigua and Barbuda (Girls’ 17 and over 4x200m) secured wins in the girls’ races.
In the boys’ competition, Queen’s Royal College (QRC) prevailed for another year earning 146 points. Reigning Carifta Boys U-20 5000m gold medallist Tafari Waldron led the way for QRC anchoring the school to victory in the boys’ Open 4x800m. Cladded in light blue, the youngsters dominated the U-15 age division winning three of the four titles on offer (4x100m, 4x200m and 4x400m). They also prevailed in the boys’ U-17 4x200m, were second in the boys’ U-17 4x100m and 4x400m, and collected bronze in the boys’ U-17 4x60m shuttle hurdles. Roxborough took gold in the boys’ U-15 and U-17 4x60m shuttle relays and was second behind QRC in the boys’ U-15 4x100m, 4x200m and 4x400m.
Jamaica’s Kingston College athletes won the boys’ 17 and under 4x100m and 4x400m, the only events they competed in. Fatima College won the boys’ U-17 4x400m and Princess Margaret High of Antigua and Barbuda topped the boys’ 17 and over 4x200m.
This year’s edition of the Secondary Schools Relays was renamed the Trinbago Schools Relays. The top eight finishers qualified for the 2024 National Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships carded for the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo on February 20 and 21.
This year, six regional teams (Hydel High, Kingston College-Jamaica; St Vincent Grammar School, Barriouallie Secondary-St Vincent and the Grenadines; Princess Margaret Secondary Schools-Antigua and Barbuda and St Lucia Sports Academy participated in the one-day meet with travel and accommodation provided by the government of T&T.
The next event on the local track and field calendar is the Masters Development Meet at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on January 27.
