Newly appointed Trinidad and Tobago Under-19 captain Brendan Boodoo was named the Premier Division One Player of the Year when the Secondary Schools Cricket League (SSCL) held its annual awards ceremony at the Couva Point Lisas Chamber of Commerce, Camden Road, Couva, on Tuesday.
The Presentation College San Fernando captain scored 382 runs during the league competition while also claiming 10 wickets as the San Fernando-based team won both the league (50 overs) and Intercol (T20) titles this season, playing unbeaten in both competitions.
After collecting the award, Boodoo said, “Well, it’s a really good feeling coming back and winning back the two titles, the league and Intercol, that we lost against Presentation College Chaguanas. It’s a really good feeling to know that we were consistent enough to do it in 2023 and come back to do it in 2026.”
ASJA Girls’ College, Charlieville batter Jannah Mohammed, who scored two triple-figure scores (167 not out and 165 not out) in the Girls’ Open Division and added a further 132 runs in the Girls’ Hard-Ball Division, was named the Girls’ Player of the Year.
Mohammed was not on hand to receive her award, which was received by her brother, Presentation College Chaguanas captain Zakariyya Mohammed, on her behalf.
Trinity College East all-rounder Johanson Gajadhar was the Premier Division Two Player of the Year. The left-arm seamer took 19 wickets and scored 220 runs, which included a century, during the season, which concluded in May.
Guest speaker at Tuesday’s ceremony, veteran sports journalist Ruskin Mark, called on the SSCL, participating schools and cricket clubs to invest in player development.
Mark narrowed his focus to development off the field to help the players to become more well-rounded athletes who can shine in other aspects.
“Today, as you all are performing at a high level, imagine that you make a hundred or you take five wickets and a reporter or somebody is going to come up with a microphone in front of you. What are you going to say? ‘Well, it was a-a-a (stammers deliberately); it was a good one. ‘It’s not good enough,’ Mark advised before adding, ‘What I’m calling on is that the league and the schools or whoever, the clubs, really invest in developing these youngsters now.”
