The Billiards Sports Organization of Trinidad and Tobago, BSOTT, hosted its second Masters Cup tournament last weekend at the Pyramid Sports Bar in Gasparillo. Aaron Raghoonanan emerged the winner breezing through the two-day tournament undefeated, winning all five of his matches.
It is redemption of sorts for Raghoonanan, who lost in the championship match in the inaugural Masters Cup in 2025. The Masters Cup is a double-elimination tournament, which features the top 16 players in the country, based on results from BSOTT’s monthly tournaments held throughout the year.
This year, the final featured Raghoonanan, who was ranked third going into the tournament, against the top-ranked Clint Bachan. The final was a bit of a mismatch as the race to eleven finished eleven frames to three in Rahgoonanan’s favour. It was a case of sweet revenge after Bachan, who is the National nine ball champion, beat his Masters Cup final’s opponent in this year’s National nine ball championships, which was held in June. On his way to the final, Raghoonanan beat his National Pool League United Stars teammate Keshawn Rodney 7-1 and Damien Bisnath 7-2 in the opening round on Saturday.
He returned on Sunday and took care of Adrian Logie 7-5 in what proved to be his toughest match of the tournament.
His next encounter was against Anil Ramadhar; the winner of that match would advance to the Championship final. Ramadhar, who is the vice president of BSOTT, had his best showing in top level competition for some time. He beat some big guns along the way and was responsible for pushing Sham Jagerssar, the inaugural Masters Cup winner to the losers’ bracket with a 7-5 victory. He did the same to Vishaal Singh, winning that encounter 7-4 and really showed his fight by also sending Bachan to the losers’ side by way of a close 7-6 win.
However, Raghoonanan, had no intention of missing out again and ended Ramadhar’s winning streak 9-4. With Raghoonanan through to the Grand Final, Ramadhar had one more opportunity to book a place in the championship match but found himself in a rematch with a rejuvenated Clint Bachan, who not long before, defeated the number two ranked Lyndon Ramkissoon 7-6. This time around Bachan turned the tables on Ramadhar, nine frames to four. Bachan, before being pushed to the losers’ bracket, defeated Ravi Goorah 7-3 and Zubir Sankar 7-2. Unfortunately for the National 9 Ball title holder, his game deserted him at the most inopportune of times and Raghoonanan prevailed in the final with some clinical play.
Raghoonan’s effort earned him $4,000 and a trophy, which Bachan collected $2,000 and a trophy; Ramadhar, $1,000 and a trophy; and Ramkissoon, $800 and a trophy.
With the win, Raghoonanan adds the Masters Cup title to his National 8-ball and 10-ball wins and is also the 2024 and 2025 Dutch Caribbean Champion. He will be going for the three-peat when the Dutch Caribbean Championships shoot off in March 2026.
The race for a place in the Masters Cup 2026 cues off next month with the Carnival Crackshot.
