The pair of Zachery Byng and B'jorn Hall overcame countless missed chances as a doubles pair in the past, to secure their first title at the International Tennis Federation's (ITF) J30 Castries in St Lucia, on Friday.
After the win, both Hall and Byng said the victory was always going to come. In yesterday's key final, the pair got a major scare 7-6(2) in the tiebreak in the first set against the United States combination of Tyler Bush and Grant Kleppinger.
The T&T duo ranked the top seed in the tournament, then levelled the series 1-1 when holding off their counterparts 6-1 in the second set, a result that sent the match to a third set.
However, the T&T pair sealed the win and the title by prevailing 13-11 for an overall 2-1 win.
Byng and Hall began playing doubles last year, coincidentally at the same J30 St Lucia but lost to the team of Sebastien Byng and Afi Lucas from St Vincent in the final.
An elated Byng (Zachery) told Guardian Media Sports after the win that they went into the final confident as they were the top-ranked pair.
"We knew that we had a good chance as we like playing with each other. We have a synergy with each other and we showed it yesterday," Byng said.
Hall added he feels really good about the win.
"I felt that we had it coming. We know each other's game really well as we have been playing together for a while. We came close to winning in the past, having reached the semifinals in St Vincent twice last year and then at home in T&T in April."
The pair is expected to wing out today for two tournaments at the J30 Villa in St Vincent and will return home for another ITF-sanctioned tournament in two weeks.
Meanwhile, apart from the triumph of Byng and Hall, there was also a crowning moment for Bush in the boys' singles final. He defeated his countryman Max Goldemberg in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 on court one, while the girls' title went to American Scarlett Fagan, the tournament's fourth seed who prevailed over Jaiya Siffrard, the third-ranked player from the United States, 6-3, 6-1.
