T&T's Em-Miryam Campbell-Smith and Lilly Mohammed stayed on course to reach the final of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Carnival Cup Junior (under-18) Girls Tournament when they won their all-local quarterfinal matches at the National Racquet Centre, Orange Grove Main Road, Tacarigua, Tuesday.
The top-ranked USA-based Campbell-Smith, 14, who copped her first ITF Junior title earlier this month in the Doubles in Nicaragua, brushed aside Shiloh Walker 6-3, 6-1 and meets USA's Marcella Roversi, ranked fourth, in today's semifinal after the latter whipped T&T's Naomi Campbell 6-0, 6-1 in their quarterfinal.
And in the other half of the draw, the third-ranked Mohammed eased past Cyra Ramcharan 6-0, 6-4 to set up a clash with last week's tournament winner, USA's Mildalyn D'Aguilar, who ousted second-ranked T&T's Cameron Wong, the 2023 national Under-18 and Under-21 champion.. 6-0, 6-0.
In the lone Girls Doubles quarterfinal, T&T's Shiloh Walker and Roversi defeated Madison Khan and Ramcharan 6-2, 6-1 and will meet top-ranked Campbell-Smith and Wong, who were on a bye, for a place in the final, while in the other semis, local Mohammed sisters Lilly and Naomi face T&T's Reina Alexis and D'Aguilar.
Byng, Hall through to the boys quarterfinals
T&T's Zachery Byng and B'jorn Hall advanced to the quarterfinals without much fuss.
The second-seeded Byng, who was handed a round-of-32 bye on Monday, secured a spot in the quarterfinal with relative ease when his opponent, Canada's Chris Bulgaru, retired trailing 0-3 in the opening set and next faces USA's Luke Colson, who humbled Austrian Jan Goeberndorfer-Steiner, the fifth seed, 6-3, 6-3.
France-based Hall powered past USA's Diego Pesciotta 6-3, 6-2 and will meet eight-ranked Canadian Hayden Grech, who denied Luca Denoon an all-T&T quarterfinal via a 7-5, 6-2 win.
T&T's Aaron Subero also saw his tournament run come to an end in the last-16 after going under to Canada's Xzavier Hastick, ranked seventh, 2-6, 1-6, with the latter set to meet USA's Everett Garrett, who upstaged third-ranked Ricardo Winkel of Curacao 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
And in the other remaining quarterfinal, top-ranked Alex Huszar meets Colombian Pablo Robledo Hoyos after their wins against USA's Alexander Weienr 6-0,. 6-1, and Brazilian Caio Henrique Lara Campos, ranked sixth, 6-1, 6-1, respectively.
In the Boys Doubles round-of-16, T&T's Beckham Sylvester combined with Barbadian Aidan Clarke to beat Barbadian Keyan Goodridge and Pesciotta 3-0 and retired for a quarterfinal date with Hall and Byng, the second-ranked pairing, while T&T's Jayden Mitchell and Jamaican Kahj Mark Anthony Clarke battled past local pair Deron Dumas and Aaron Subero 7-5, 6-3 for a meeting with fourth-ranked Hastick and Campos, who whipped T&T's Daniel Dumas and Jacob Jacelon 6-1, 6-1. In the other last-16 matches, T&T duos were all beaten, with Canadians Bulgaru and Grech defeating Jaylon Chapman and Denoon 6-4, 3-6, 13-11, and Americans Colson and Garrett trouncing Nirav Dougdeen and Jovan Garibana 6-0, 6-0.
