Rising T&T tennis talent Em-Miryam Campbell-Smith claimed the 14 and under girls' title in Level 6 of the Pumpkin Bowl III of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Tournament at the Wellington Tennis Center, 3100 Lyons Rd, Wellington, Florida, USA.
In the final on Sunday, Campbell-Smith, up against the top-seed Alexa Ginzburg in the final, was deadlocked at 7-apiece before she prevailed in the super tie 7-5 for the crown.
Campbell-Smith, who recently entered the HITT Tennis Academy in Sunrise, Florida, on a full-time basis, defeated the second-seeded Zoriana Voloshyna in the semifinal 8-4, also Sunday in the girls 14 and under singles for her place in the final.
Voloshyna advanced to the semifinals after winning Group 2 of the playoffs, which consisted of Bindi Ramnarine, Isabel Ramsay and Ziva Garaj.
In the three-group qualifying playoff, Campbell-Smith, who earlier this year had achieved the record for the most titles for a T&T player in the Confederation of Tennis of Central America and the Caribbean (COTECC) region, had dominated Group Three, which featured Larissa Sakamoto, Mercedes Laub and Kristoria Haynes while the top-ranked player at the tournament Alexa Ginzburg controlled Group One.
