Trinidad and Tobago Red Force leg spinner Yannic Cariah produced the first hat-trick of the 2025 CG United Super 50 tournament on Friday, when the Red Force defeated Jamaica Scorpions by 75 runs at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba.
After a rain-abandoned opening match against the Barbados Pride on Wednesday, the 2023 Champions were determined not to fall further behind the leaders, Windward Islands (who beat the Leewards on opening day) and Barbados (who beat the Leewards on Friday).
The Red Force were put in to bat first and scored 256 for 8 from their 20 overs.
Veteran batsman Jason Mohammed led the way with 87; the former West Indies ODI captain struck five sixes and two fours in his 103-ball knock. He was supported by Cephas Cooper, who signalled to West Indies Head Coach Darren Sammy that he is able to assist with the West Indies White Ball batting woes at the top of the order.
The Powergen opener hit 11 fours in an innings that spanned 78 balls. Together the two Powergen batsmen put on 62 for the third wicket partnership before Cooper departed at 106 for three.
Contributions from West Indies all-rounder Navin Bidaisee (20) and Joshua James (22) added valuable runs at the lower end of the innings.
In reply, Jamaica were put on the back foot quickly when they lost Carlos Brown for five with the score on 19.
They made a mini recovery, but when they lost Kirk McKenzie for 39 at 67 for three, they lost momentum and lost half their batting lineup in the 16th over at 81 for five.
Brad Barnes, who, along with Marquino Mindley, took three wickets when Red Force batted, shared in a 52-run recovery innings with Peat Salmon and took the score to 133 when Salmon departed for 33.
Cariah then derailed the Jamaicans in the 38th over, taking the wickets of Abhihai Mansingh, Jeavor Royal and Mindley, one after the other, in consecutive innings as the Scorpions were eventually bowled out for 181 in 39.4 overs.
Cariah finished with 4-24 while Goolie took 3-15.
