Caribs retained the men's senior title at the fourth annual Silvo Rugby Sevens tournament at the Leo Thompson Ground, Lumsden Street, Gasparillo on Saturday.
Caribs whipped Defence Force 25-0 in the final. The winner opened the scoring with two minutes left in the first half of the 14 minute match with a try to go five points up. They went up 10-nil ahead at half time. The yellow-top Carib players were able to counter the superior speed of the swift Defence Force attack with solid blocks. The victors were successful with three more tries to end the match 25-0. They missed out going further ahead after not completing several conversions.
Caribs advanced to the final after beating Royalians 21-0 in the semifinals while Defence Force got past Harvard 15-5.
In the Group stage, Carib came out ahead in Group One winning both matches. They defeated Harvard (21-12) and Exiles (19-1). Harvard was second with one win overcoming Exile, 24-15.
The Soldiers topped Group Two with three triumphs over Royalians (19-10), Rainbows (36-5) and Police (19-10). Royalians were runner-up narrowly ahead of Rainbows. Both squads ended on six points from one win, one draw and one defeat as both played to a 12-12 draw in their head-to-head match. However, the Belmont-based Royalian outfit got the nod after scoring more goals (46 to 43).
Maalik Rayside led the charge for Caribs and took home the Most Valuable Player (MVP) prize.
San Juan copped the inaugural Under-20 category (which replaced the U-16 division in previous years) with a 25-0 over hosts Silvo. The outcome was a reversal of the result when the two teams met in the group stage earlier in the day when Silvo came out ahead 17-12.
San Juan reached the final after dismissing Whanau 15-10 in the semifinal while Silvo was a 17-10 winner over Exiles.
Whanau took the top spot in Group One playing unbeaten trouncing Exiles (19-2) and Harvard (21-5). Exiles were next with one win, a 19-5 win over Harvard.
Silvo was out front in Group Two conquering School of Rugby 34-0 as well. San Juan blazed Schools of Rugby, 36-0.
Matthew Joseph was the standout performer for San Juan and was crowned the MVP.
Silvo upstaged Caribs 36-5 in an Exhibition U-16 match.
Organiser of the tournament Ronald Silverton was pleased to host the event yet again.
"(I started the tournament) because of what rugby did for me. It changed my life and always kept me on a positive vibe. I have been around the way playing (rugby). Now is the time to give back to the youths." He continued, "Every year it has been growing. You see new faces and players. I want to thank God first. I want to also thank Bernard Yetming, Brendon O'Farrell."
Yetming, who has been supporting the one-day competition from inception, praised Silverton for initiative.
"Ronald was an ex-Carib, national and West Indies player. (He) was very prolific in his career and is giving back to his community and the sport. From the first year to now, it has expanded greatly. The teams and support have gotten better. The competitor was good. This is a great avenue for the youngsters to be recognised in their community."
Present were respective national 15s and sevens coaches, Dale Trotman and Jonathan O'Connor.
