Top junior player Aiden Carter and Jerome Ward had winning performances on the opening day of the Davis Cup Trial at the National Racquet Centre in Tacarigua yesterday.
With three spots and two reserve places available to represent T&T at next year's Davis Cup tournament, Carter, whose consistent performances throughout the year is almost certain to earn him a place in the team, was off to a flyer, whipping Keshan Moonasar in his first game on court three 6-3, 6-3.
And after a period of appropriate rest, Carter, the 2016 COTECC champ and Under- 18 Coca-Cola International Doubles champion, returned to the court to destroy his main rival Adam Ramkissoon in straight sets 2-6, 6-1, 6-4. But with the trials scheduled to run for three days, Carter is set to return to the courts again today to prove his worth along with some 11 others.
Ward opened on court two against Richard Chung and prevailed after a gutsy battle 7-6(4), 7-3 in his first game. However, he was made to come from behind in the second game with Scott Hackshaw, after the latter whipped him 6-2 to signal his intentions of being among the five players to wear the red, white and black for T&T at the Davis Cup.
Ward, however, stormed back to clobber his opponent in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to for the win. In other matches yesterday Akile Duke disposed of Nkrumah Patrick 6-1, 6-3 while Nabeel Mohammed, the Sagicor Junior Tennis Under-21 champion went down to Dexter Mahase in two sets 6-3, 6-2.
