National women's beach volleyball duo Suraya Chase and Phylecia Armstrong ended in the 12th position of 15 teams while compatriots Britney Choon and Tsyan Selvon ended 14th as the fourth leg of the NORCECA Beach Volleyball Tour ended at Playa Los Corales in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, Sunday.
Competing in the playoffs for the lower position in the tournament, Chase and Armstrong were first outplayed 9-21, 11-21 by Canada’s Lea Monkhouse and Marie-Alex Bélanger in their ninth to 12th match-up and following this with another loss to the Dominican Republic duo of Crismil Paniagua, and Nallelin Taveras 17-21, 5-21 in just 34 minutes in their battle for the 11th position.
Choon and Selvon defeated Grenada’s Keshanice Mitchell and Thornia Mitchell 21-11, 20-22, 15-10 in their 13th to 16th semifinal, but with a chance to end on a winning note, the second T&T women's team suffered a 6-21, 14-21 loss to El Salvadoreans’ Kathya Vasquez and Sofia Velasquez in the playoff for 13th yesterday.
When Pool B round-robin play ended on Saturday morning, Chase and Armstrong eventually finished on a high by beating Mitchell and Mitchell 19-21, 21-14, 15, rebounding a pair of losses from opening matches on Friday against Guatemalans Natalia Girón, and Paola Alvarado 15-21, 14-21, and Costa Rica’s Angel Williams and Kianny Quesada 8-21, 11-12.
In Pool C, former two-time Caribbean Under-21 champions Choon and Selvon ended without a win after losses against USA’s Lexy Denaburg and Molly Turner, 5-21, 3-21 on Saturday and against Mexico’s Esparanza Albarrán, and Yeray Vidaurrazaga 6-21, 10-21, and Monkhouse and Bélanger 7-21, 7-21.
The T&T men faired just slightly better than their female counterparts as Fabien Whitfield and Daneil Williams ended their tournament on a positive note with a 21-6, 21-14 triumph over Grenada’s Darron Christopher Oxford and Isaac Nelson for the 13th spot.
After securing two top-ten finishes in Varadero, Cuba (May 10-14), seventh, and then sixth in the Cayman Islands (May 18-22), the pair would have been disappointed with their performance, which reverted to the 13th position they had secured in the opening leg of the season in Aguascalientes, Mexico (April 20-24).
The T&T men entered yesterday's final playoff match with a 0-3 win-loss record in Punta Cana after failing to win any of their matches in a tough round-robin Group D, suffering losses to Jorge Rosario and Rolvin Maldonado of the Dominican Republic 13-21, 18-21 and to the USA’s Timothy Brewster, and Kyle Friend 9-21, 14-21. They then also went under to Canada’s Jake MacNeil and Alexander William Russell, 15-21, 10-21, in their final pool match yesterday.
In the other matches in the pool, Brewster and Friend defeated Mac Neil, and Russell 21-13, 21-11 and Rosario, and Maldonado 21-14, 21-11 to top the pool with a perfect 3-0 record while Russell and Mac Neil ended second with a 2-1-mark courtesy of their 21-16, 21-11 win over Rosario, and Maldonado.
In Pool C, Oxford and Nelson were outclassed by Guatemala’s Andy Blanco, and Luis Garcia 6-21, 11-21; US Virgin Islands’ Robert Cronshaw, and Bryce Mayer 13-21, 13-21, and Canada’s Arran Chambers/Liam Kopp, 14-21, 9-21.
