Last year’s T&T Carifta Games gold medal-winning brothers Kadeem and Hakeem Chinapoo led a list of Trinidad and Tobago athletes to achieve the games standard in their event when the 2025 Trials continued at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, on Saturday.
Their efforts all but reserved their spots on the Trinidad and Tobago team for the 52nd edition of the Games, which will be hosted at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, Port-of-Spain, on the customary Easter Weekend from April 19 to 21.
Hundreds of athletes demonstrated their desire to be selected, headed by Kadeem, the Boys Under-17 200m champion and 100m silver medallist at the 51st games in Grenada last year, who has made the step up to compete in the Under-20 age group this year, joining his brother Hakeem, who was a member of last year’s Under-20 4x100m champion team.
On day two of the Trials, both sprinters lined up in the Boys Under-20 individual 100m final at yesterday’s trials, with Kadeem in lane five and Hakeem in lane three. The siblings, representing Simplex, went on to clock identical times of 10.53 seconds, beneath the Carifta standard of 10.58, all but booking their spots on this year’s team.
In a blistering final, Trevaughn Stewart of BURN and Zaccheus Charles of Point Fortin New Jets placed third and fourth, respectively.
Amazingly, they also produced identical times, clocking 10.56 seconds to dip beneath the Carifta standard.
Speaking to Guarding Media Sports after the tight final, Kadeem, 17, said, “It feels great because this is what we have been training for.”
He added, “I am now coming off of injury, so I surprised myself, but I am thankful.”
When asked about his prospects of making a statement in his first year in the Under-20 division, Kadeem was modest, commenting that he was simply happy to be able to attain a Carifta standard soon after returning to competition, having been sidelined for more than a month due to injury.
Earlier, Hakeem was the only athlete to achieve the Carifta qualifying standard in the preliminary round of the Under-20 Boys 100m, clocking 10.51 seconds in heat three out of eight. Charles was the second fastest overall, clocking 10.59 seconds and placing second in the same heat as Chinapoo. Stewart was the third fastest overall by clocking 10.76 to win heat six.
Meanwhile, twins Tyrique and Tenique Vincent also brought their Carifta pedigree to bear on the day’s programme.
Tyrique, a silver medallist in the Under-17 Long Jump in Grenada, has also graduated to the Under-20 age group, attaining the qualification standard in the 110m hurdles. His time of 14.40 seconds in yesterday’s final made the Concorde Athletics athlete the only one to dip beneath the 14.43 seconds standard. Second-placed Jeremiah Francis of D’Abadie recorded 14.94, and third-placed Anderson Burris of Mercury clocked 15.24.
Tyrique also competed in and led the under-20 boys decathlon, having amassed 3410 points from the first five events. He won the 100m, shot put, and 400m events in the decathlon and placed second in the high jump and third in the long jump.
Teniel, also a multi-discipline athlete in the under-20 girls heptathlon, earned 2,957 points from the first four events and looks set to return to the T&T team. Last year’s bronze medallist in the under-17 high jump says she will focus on the heptathlon this time, having also attained a Carifta Games standard in the under-20 girls 100m hurdles yesterday, where she placed second in that final. She was one of three athletes to go under the standard of 15.59 seconds in the race, with Jenna-Marie Thomas winning in 14.47 seconds and Kailah Warde third in 15.03 seconds.
Thomas, last year’s Under-17 Girls silver medallist in the 100m hurdles, said, “I was happy about the time because it was my season opener. I have a lot to clean up going into the Carifta Games, but I am excited to represent my country. I know I am under twenty now, so I have to step up my game to compete and to medal again. I am coming to get the job done to make my mum proud and my country proud.”
Day three of the 2025 Carifta Trials will be held today, also at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, from 10 am.
