Last year’s T&T Carif­ta Games gold medal-win­ning broth­ers Kadeem and Ha­keem Chi­napoo led a list of Trinidad and To­ba­go ath­letes to achieve the games stan­dard in their event when the 2025 Tri­als con­tin­ued at the Man­ny Ramjohn Sta­di­um, Mara­bel­la, on Sat­ur­day.

Their ef­forts all but re­served their spots on the Trinidad and To­ba­go team for the 52nd edi­tion of the Games, which will be host­ed at the Hase­ly Craw­ford Sta­di­um, Mu­cu­rapo, Port-of-Spain, on the cus­tom­ary East­er Week­end from April 19 to 21.

Hun­dreds of ath­letes demon­strat­ed their de­sire to be se­lect­ed, head­ed by Kadeem, the Boys Un­der-17 200m cham­pi­on and 100m sil­ver medal­list at the 51st games in Grena­da last year, who has made the step up to com­pete in the Un­der-20 age group this year, join­ing his broth­er Ha­keem, who was a mem­ber of last year’s Un­der-20 4x100m cham­pi­on team.

On day two of the Tri­als, both sprint­ers lined up in the Boys Un­der-20 in­di­vid­ual 100m fi­nal at yes­ter­day’s tri­als, with Kadeem in lane five and Ha­keem in lane three. The sib­lings, rep­re­sent­ing Sim­plex, went on to clock iden­ti­cal times of 10.53 sec­onds, be­neath the Carif­ta stan­dard of 10.58, all but book­ing their spots on this year’s team.

In a blis­ter­ing fi­nal, Tre­vaughn Stew­art of BURN and Za­c­cheus Charles of Point Fortin New Jets placed third and fourth, re­spec­tive­ly.

Amaz­ing­ly, they al­so pro­duced iden­ti­cal times, clock­ing 10.56 sec­onds to dip be­neath the Carif­ta stan­dard.

Speak­ing to Guard­ing Me­dia Sports af­ter the tight fi­nal, Kadeem, 17, said, “It feels great be­cause this is what we have been train­ing for.”

He added, “I am now com­ing off of in­jury, so I sur­prised my­self, but I am thank­ful.”

When asked about his prospects of mak­ing a state­ment in his first year in the Un­der-20 di­vi­sion, Kadeem was mod­est, com­ment­ing that he was sim­ply hap­py to be able to at­tain a Carif­ta stan­dard soon af­ter re­turn­ing to com­pe­ti­tion, hav­ing been side­lined for more than a month due to in­jury.

Ear­li­er, Ha­keem was the on­ly ath­lete to achieve the Carif­ta qual­i­fy­ing stan­dard in the pre­lim­i­nary round of the Un­der-20 Boys 100m, clock­ing 10.51 sec­onds in heat three out of eight. Charles was the sec­ond fastest over­all, clock­ing 10.59 sec­onds and plac­ing sec­ond in the same heat as Chi­napoo. Stew­art was the third fastest over­all by clock­ing 10.76 to win heat six.

Mean­while, twins Tyrique and Tenique Vin­cent al­so brought their Carif­ta pedi­gree to bear on the day’s pro­gramme.

Tyrique, a sil­ver medal­list in the Un­der-17 Long Jump in Grena­da, has al­so grad­u­at­ed to the Un­der-20 age group, at­tain­ing the qual­i­fi­ca­tion stan­dard in the 110m hur­dles. His time of 14.40 sec­onds in yes­ter­day’s fi­nal made the Con­corde Ath­let­ics ath­lete the on­ly one to dip be­neath the 14.43 sec­onds stan­dard. Sec­ond-placed Je­re­mi­ah Fran­cis of D’Abadie record­ed 14.94, and third-placed An­der­son Bur­ris of Mer­cury clocked 15.24.

Tyrique al­so com­pet­ed in and led the un­der-20 boys de­cathlon, hav­ing amassed 3410 points from the first five events. He won the 100m, shot put, and 400m events in the de­cathlon and placed sec­ond in the high jump and third in the long jump.

Te­niel, al­so a mul­ti-dis­ci­pline ath­lete in the un­der-20 girls hep­tathlon, earned 2,957 points from the first four events and looks set to re­turn to the T&T team. Last year’s bronze medal­list in the un­der-17 high jump says she will fo­cus on the hep­tathlon this time, hav­ing al­so at­tained a Carif­ta Games stan­dard in the un­der-20 girls 100m hur­dles yes­ter­day, where she placed sec­ond in that fi­nal. She was one of three ath­letes to go un­der the stan­dard of 15.59 sec­onds in the race, with Jen­na-Marie Thomas win­ning in 14.47 sec­onds and Kailah Warde third in 15.03 sec­onds.

Thomas, last year’s Un­der-17 Girls sil­ver medal­list in the 100m hur­dles, said, “I was hap­py about the time be­cause it was my sea­son open­er. I have a lot to clean up go­ing in­to the Carif­ta Games, but I am ex­cit­ed to rep­re­sent my coun­try. I know I am un­der twen­ty now, so I have to step up my game to com­pete and to medal again. I am com­ing to get the job done to make my mum proud and my coun­try proud.”

Day three of the 2025 Carif­ta Tri­als will be held to­day, al­so at the Man­ny Ramjohn Sta­di­um, Mara­bel­la, from 10 am.
