T&T’s Alexi Costa-Ramirez copped silver in the women’s omnium at the Pan American Elite Track Cycling Championships which continued at the Vicente Alejo Chancay Velodrome, in San Juan, Argentina on Friday night.
The local cyclist finishes with 130 points, behind gold medallist Victoria Velazco Fuentes of Mexico. In third place was Colombian Lina Mabel Rojas Zapata with 128 points.
The Omnium is an event consisting of four races that take place on the same day: the scratch race, the tempo race, the elimination race and the points race. For the first three races, riders earn 40 points for a win, 38 for second and 36 for third and on down a descending scale.
In the final 80-lap points race, points are awarded for a sprint every 10 laps, including double points for the last sprint. Cyclists also gain and lose points by lapping the field or getting lapped.
The eventual winner led by 24 points over Costa-Ramirez going into the points race. The Mexican ended up winning by nine points over a determined Ramirez.
Costa-Ramirez, who recently joined the professional team Miami Raiders after a stint with CWA Racing, missed out on a medal in the Scratch Race on Wednesday night.
She finished only ahead of two of the 13 riders, Ecuadorian Dayana Aguilar, and Uruguayan, Paola Silva. Mexican Antonienta Gaziola won the 7.5km 30-laps events ahead of Brazil’s Wellyda Dos Santos, with USA’s Gulick Colleen, third.
Nicholas Paul is the lone T&T rider, remaining in the Men’s Sprint event.
The reigning Keirin champion clocked 9.439 seconds at a speed of 76.279 km/h to qualify for the round of 16 with the fastest time in the qualification round. T&T’s Kwesi Browne also moved on to the next round with a time of 10.018 to be 12th overall while compatriot Qunicy Alexander just missed out on advancing after placing 17th with 10.139.
Paul (10.185) faced off against American Evan Boone in heat one in the 1/8 Finals and emerged the winner to book a spot in the quarterfinals. Later in heat five of the 1/8 Finals, Browne was eliminated by Canadian Ryan Dodyk (10.312).
Paul will be challenged by Colombia’s Santiago Ramirez Morales in the quarterfinals, today.
The T&T cyclist is chasing his second gold after retaining his men’s Keirin title on Thursday night. The 24-year-old won ahead of Surinamese Jair Tjon En Fa and Canada’s James Hedgcock bagged bronze ahead of Colombian Kevin Quintero, Dodyk, and T&T’s Browne in the six-man final contested over six laps.
On Wednesday night, Paul partnered with Browne and Zion Pulido claimed the silver medal in the Men’s Team Sprint final.
