The Omnium is an event consisting of four races that take place on the same day: the scratch race, the tempo race, the elimination race and the points race. For the first three races, riders earn 40 points for a win, 38 for second and 36 for third and on down a descending scale.

In the final 80-lap points race, points are awarded for a sprint every 10 laps, including double points for the last sprint. Cyclists also gain and lose points by lapping the field or getting lapped.

The eventual winner led by 24 points over Costa-Ramirez going into the points race. The Mexican ended up winning by nine points over a determined Ramirez.

Costa-Ramirez, who recently joined the professional team Miami Raiders after a stint with CWA Racing, missed out on a medal in the Scratch Race on Wednesday night.

T&T’s Kwesi Browne also moved on to the next round with a time of 10.018 to be 12th overall while compatriot Qunicy Alexander just missed out on advancing after placing 17th with 10.139.

Paul will be challenged by Colombia’s Santiago Ramirez Morales in the quarterfinals, today.

The T&T cyclist is chasing his second gold after retaining his men’s Keirin title on Thursday night.
