T&T’s Enrique De Comarmond pedalled his way to an impressive bronze medal in the Under-23 Men’s Elite Road Race on the second and final day of the Elite Road Caribbean Cycling Championships in Le Gosier, Guadeloupe, yesterday.
Competing alongside countryman Tariq Wood in a six-man field, De Comarmond crossed the finish line in three hours, 39 minutes, 08.35 seconds, in the tenth spot overall, and the same time given to silver medal winner Raphael Lautone of the host country while Bermuda’s Nicholas Narraway won the gold medal in three hours, 38 minutes, 00.68 seconds to be the sixth-placed finisher overall.
Wood just missed out on a podium finish as he was fourth home in 3:39:09.62 hours, followed by hometown rider Taino Cailliau (3:39.20.60), and Martinique’s Dylan Jacques in 3:45:10.63.
The duo of De Comarmond and Wood were the only T&T riders to complete the race as Benjamin Mouttet, Maurice Burnette, and Liam Trepte all abandoned the course due to the intense heat.
Guadeloupe secured the top two placings with Damien Urcel (3:37:24.00), and Mathieu Pellegrin (3:37:58.91) taking the top two positions, while Grenada’s Red Walters, third in 3:37:58.91 as well.
On Saturday, Trepte, the recently crowned National Road Criterium champion had to settle for the 12th spot in the Men’s Time Trial in a time of 31 minutes, 59.41 seconds while De Comarmond was 18th of the 20 cyclists to complete the event in a time of 34 minutes, 35.29 seconds
It was a dominant showing from Bermuda in the men’s event with Conor White (27:36.30), Kaden Hopkins (27:41.39), and Nicholas Narraway (27:54.90) sweeping the gold, silver, and bronze medals.
Also on Saturday night at the Caribbean Cycling Union Annual General Meeting, Rowena Williams, President of T&T Cycling Federation who managed the team in Guadeloupe was elected as the Second Vice-President of the Caribbean Cycling Union to serve for the next four-year term.
The other persons elected on Saturday included members, Curacao’s Henny Bonafacio, Barbadian Charles Lynch, and Donna Kaye-Sharpe of Jamaica along with St Lucia’s Cyril Mangal (1st Vice President), Dominican Republic’s Jorge Blas Diaz (President), St Maarten’s Edsel Romney (Member), Bermuda’s Peter Dunne (Treasurer), and Anguillan Sharon Lowe (General Secretary).
