Douglas cops gold in SVG U-21 t-tennis tourney

T&T's Der­ron Dou­glas cap­tured the Open Gen­der Ju­nior (Un­der-21) ti­tle at the re­cent My Smart Toi­let Seat Ta­ble Ten­nis Tour­na­ment held in St Vin­cent and the Grenadines on Mon­day (Oc­to­ber 28).

In the cham­pi­onship match, Dou­glas of Queen's Park Ta­ble Ten­nis Club got the bet­ter of club­mate Imani Ed­wards-Tay­lor.

Ear­li­er in the quar­ter­fi­nals, Dou­glas out­played Leah Cum­ber­batch 11-4, 11-6, 11-5, 11-4 and then bat­tled past De­an­dre Calderon 11-9, 8-11, 12-10, 5-11, 11-9, 10-12, 12-10 in their semi­fi­nal meet­ing while Ed­wards-Tay­lor topped Caleb Howard 11-7, 10-12, 11-9, 12-10, 11-4 in the last eight and La­m­ont Gregg 11-7, 8-11, 8-11, 11-3, 11-9, 11-2 in their semi­fi­nal.

When the group stage took place, Dou­glas won Group Three by beat­ing Howard and Ter­ence Ash­ton while Ed­wards-Tay­lor de­feat­ed Loukhya Prem­raj and Leah Cum­ber­batch in Group Two.

In the Open Gen­der Se­nior Knock­out com­pe­ti­tion, both Dou­glas and Ed­wards-Tay­lor were oust­ed at the semi­fi­nal stage.

Dou­glas was beat­en in his semi­fi­nal by St Lu­cian Calderon 5-11, 11-6, 10-12, 6-11, 3-11 while fel­low T&T play­er Ed­wards-Tay­lor al­so fell in the fi­nal four against Bar­ba­di­an Trevor Far­ley 6-11, 8-11, 6-11, 2-11.

When the round-of-16 served off, Dou­glas swept past Luc Velox 11-5, 11-5, 11-6, 11-7 fol­lowed by Bar­ba­di­an Kevin Far­ley 7-11, 7-11, 11-6, 11-6 11-2, 6-11, 11-16 while Ed­wards-Tay­lor de­feat­ed Bar­ba­di­ans Keon Al­leyne 11-5, 11-7, 11-6, 11-7 and Mark Dow­ell 9-11, 11-8, 8-11, 4-11, 11-9, 15-13, 11-7.

The oth­er T&T play­er to reach the main draw last-16, Sel­wyn Sin­nette was stopped by Calderon 4-11, 3-11, 5-11, 5-11 in his open­ing match.

In the round-robin group stage, Dou­glas topped Group Three with 3-0 vic­to­ries over La­m­ont Gregg and Grena­da's Aman­da John while Ed­wards-Tay­lor won Group Four with wins against Mikael Hazel­wood and Ter­ence Ash­ton and Sin­nette was sec­ond in Group Eight af­ter los­ing to Dow­ell, but vic­to­ri­ous against Juwan Howard.
