The Jonathan Lyder-trained five-year-old mare El Chico Malo was brought with a well-timed run to snatch victory at the odds of 6-1 in the feature Grade Three event, the new Fly Junior Stakes over 1,100 metres on the turf track at Santa Rosa Park, Arima, Saturday.
She upstaged the 2024 Stewards Cup winner Sneaky Cheeky, who was the joint-favourite with The Goddess Nike when the starter sent the field on their way in race five on Day 10 of the Arima Race Club's (ARC) racing programme.
From the off, Barbadian apprentice Raheem Thorpe had the Ramesh Ramroop-trained champion at the head of the field and travelling well. Going to the far turn, he allowed Sneaky Cheeky to go away from the field and she opened a two-length lead on the chasing The Goddess Nike with the 500 metres left to race. As the horses swung into the straight, Sneaky Cheky was two lengths in front and, though going a bit wide into the straight, she quickened again 200m from the line and opened a length and a half lead on the chasing El Chico Malo.
Coming into the final 100m of the race, Jovika Boodramsing was riding his horse for all she was worth and she was getting closer to the Sneaky Cheeky. However, inside the final 70m, she struck the front and ran on strongly to live for another success. This time, she was winning the Grade Three Fly Junior Stakes over 1,100m. Boodramsing was the day's best rider as he landed another winner with Unbelievable for trainer Fred DeFreitas in the third race on the card.
The Michael Lutchman-trained Valiante put up another great display when he tracked favourite Have A Great Day before coming forward and passing his rival in the final 200m. Lutchman also had another winner in the last race of the day when Red Alert and Boodramsing made every inch of the running to beat Derby fourth Free Pass in a great finish.
However, the second race on the card gave young Amir Balroop what he was waiting for in his career when he rode his first winner aboard the Hot Rod Kashton for trainer Lester Alexis. He will only get better.
The first juvenile event was won by the champion John O'Brien, who saddled another 1-2 in the event. Punters made the Glenn Mendez-trained All For Harry the favourite but Dillon Khelawan and O'Brien had another winner in waiting and Dream Maker won like a champion, making all the running. This was a really good performance.
The day's leading trainer was Lutchman, who saddled two winners in Valiante and Red Alert.
However, the leading riders were Jovika Boodramsing and Tristan Phillips, who each rode two winners.
Racing will continue on November 29.
