The Jonathan Ly­der-trained five-year-old mare El Chico Ma­lo was brought with a well-timed run to snatch vic­to­ry at the odds of 6-1 in the fea­ture Grade Three event, the new Fly Ju­nior Stakes over 1,100 me­tres on the turf track at San­ta Rosa Park, Ari­ma, Sat­ur­day.

She up­staged the 2024 Stew­ards Cup win­ner Sneaky Cheeky, who was the joint-favourite with The God­dess Nike when the starter sent the field on their way in race five on Day 10 of the Ari­ma Race Club's (ARC) rac­ing pro­gramme.

From the off, Bar­ba­di­an ap­pren­tice Ra­heem Thor­pe had the Ramesh Ram­roop-trained cham­pi­on at the head of the field and trav­el­ling well. Go­ing to the far turn, he al­lowed Sneaky Cheeky to go away from the field and she opened a two-length lead on the chas­ing The God­dess Nike with the 500 me­tres left to race. As the hors­es swung in­to the straight, Sneaky Cheky was two lengths in front and, though go­ing a bit wide in­to the straight, she quick­ened again 200m from the line and opened a length and a half lead on the chas­ing El Chico Ma­lo.

Com­ing in­to the fi­nal 100m of the race, Jovi­ka Boodram­s­ing was rid­ing his horse for all she was worth and she was get­ting clos­er to the Sneaky Cheeky. How­ev­er, in­side the fi­nal 70m, she struck the front and ran on strong­ly to live for an­oth­er suc­cess. This time, she was win­ning the Grade Three Fly Ju­nior Stakes over 1,100m. Boodram­s­ing was the day's best rid­er as he land­ed an­oth­er win­ner with Un­be­liev­able for train­er Fred De­Fre­itas in the third race on the card.

The Michael Lutch­man-trained Valiante put up an­oth­er great dis­play when he tracked favourite Have A Great Day be­fore com­ing for­ward and pass­ing his ri­val in the fi­nal 200m. Lutch­man al­so had an­oth­er win­ner in the last race of the day when Red Alert and Boodram­s­ing made every inch of the run­ning to beat Der­by fourth Free Pass in a great fin­ish.

How­ev­er, the sec­ond race on the card gave young Amir Bal­roop what he was wait­ing for in his ca­reer when he rode his first win­ner aboard the Hot Rod Kash­ton for train­er Lester Alex­is. He will on­ly get bet­ter.

The first ju­ve­nile event was won by the cham­pi­on John O'Brien, who sad­dled an­oth­er 1-2 in the event. Pun­ters made the Glenn Mendez-trained All For Har­ry the favourite but Dil­lon Khelawan and O'Brien had an­oth­er win­ner in wait­ing and Dream Mak­er won like a cham­pi­on, mak­ing all the run­ning. This was a re­al­ly good per­for­mance.

The day's lead­ing train­er was Lutch­man, who sad­dled two win­ners in Valiante and Red Alert.

How­ev­er, the lead­ing rid­ers were Jovi­ka Boodram­s­ing and Tris­tan Phillips, who each rode two win­ners.
