Goals from Jonathan Mason and Jeremai Nanton ensured that Fatima College kept their position at the top of the 16-team standings in the Premier Division of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) with 22 points, when they defeated Queen’s Royal College (QRC) at home on Mucurapo Road in Port-of-Spain on Saturday.
But they have now begun a battle for the top spot with previous leaders, Naparima College, who came back to the field and demolished their counterparts, St Augustine Secondary, 8-0 at their Lewis Street, San Fernando home.
The postponement of the Naps versus St Benedict’s College match on October 8 enabled the Mucurapo Road-based team to assume the top spot with a victory over San Juan North. Naparima, a multiple-time winner of the South Zone League and InterCol titles, produced a no-nonsense performance, firing eight goals past the once deadly East team, known as "The Green Machine". Aaron Raymond, the brother of national defender Andre Raymond, led the way with a brace.
Apart from Raymond, Naparima also got goals from Elijah Edwards, Jabari Rodriguez, Jerrel Cooper, Jayden Caprietta, Sebastian James, and Riquelme Phillips. Manager Percy Samlalsingh said his team was flawless in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, Presentation College, San Fernando stumbled against Signal Hill but stays in contention for the top spot on 18 points. At their home at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in Union, Marabella, a powerful Presentation was expected to claim the three points, but they received a major shock when a lone strike from Emmanuel Wright stopped the Southerners in their tracks.
Despite the result, ‘Pres’ still kept third on the standings with 18 points, while Fatima and Naparima College continue to hold the top two positions.
Meanwhile, Southern rivals St Benedict’s College shook off a concern about whether they would have schoolboy sensation Derrel "Zoom Zoom" Garcia back on their roster for the rest of the season, when they defeated Arima North Secondary 2-0 at Mahaica Sporting Complex in Point Fortin. Elijah David and Josiah Ochoa did the trick to shut out the 'Dial Dynamos" of Arima for maximum points.
‘Zoom Zoom’ Garcia, who was out of the country playing football in the Guyana Football League, on loan from San Juan Jabloteh, returned home on Thursday morning and blanked all attempts for him to play for the ‘La Romain Lions’ for the rest of the season. ‘Zoom Zoom’ Garcia made it clear he does not want to play in the SSFL and prefers to play in Tier I of the T&T Premier Football League, which gets going later this month.
