Mexican rider Eder Frayre surged to the top of the field in Division 1 of the Tobago International Cycle Classic Friday morning, showing tremendous endurance and stamina to emerge victorious in Stage 2 to win the gruelling 90 kilometres race which started and finished at Shaw Park.
T&T's Akil Campbell, competing for Team Heatwave, finished in second spot, more than two minutes behind the Mexican, posting a time of (2: 14. 49.98) and USA's Sam Smith, riding for Bike Works p/b Fred Beans, finished third in the stage in the time of 2:14.50.16.
Frayre, who represents the Legion of Los Angeles team, has so far stamped his class on the classic and after he stormed home as the runner-up position on Thursday’s opening 20-kilometre race, showed consistency by improving on this performance to cross the finish line in a commendable time of two hours, 12 minutes, 23.98 seconds (2:12.23.98). In an event that took the riders through along the Claude Noel Highway, unto the Milford Road in Lowlands and then back to the start in a 10-lap circuit.
Veteran Emile Abraham continued to produce jaw-dropping performances with his fourth-place finish in 2:14: 50.27, reminding all of his pedigree as the winner of a silver medal in the men's individual road race at the 2007 Pan American Games. He now occupies the third overall position after two days of the Classic, having crossed the finish line in the sixth position on Thursday morning (2:33.52.97).
Jonathan Brown of Miami Blazers, who entered the day as overall leader after winning the first stage of the event, faltered in the conditions and pace set by the front runners and had to settle for sixth place yesterday in a time of 2:14.51.24 minutes, but still remains in second place overall and in contention for the classic’s crown.
Other notable performances came from Gavin Hladly (Heatwave) in 2:14.50.83, Mateo Castaneda (Raiders) in 2:14.51.94, T&T's Liam Trepte (Raiders) in 2:14.52.27 and Andrew Scarano (Team Pharmaco/JLD) who secured positions fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth respectively.
Meanwhile, in Division 2 - which comprised elite males, u-19 men and women, and masters - Jadian Neaves surged to the lead for the overall title with a winning time of 1:11.52.91
Syndel Samaroo, the rising T&T sprint ace took the runner-up spot in 1:14.35.971, with Andre Greene (1:14.36.374) in third and Alexi Ramirez (1:14.37.528) finishing in an encouraging fourth place.
The classic continues today starting with Stage Three starting and ending at Post Office Junction on Wilson Road, with the Scarborough Criterium with a start time of 8 am. The course will take cyclists north on Wilson Road on Garden side Street, right on Castries Street, right onto Wilson Road finishing at the junction making 60 laps on a flat and fast surface.
