Tyra Gittens leapt to gold in the women's long jump at the Troyes International Meet in Troyes, France on Sunday.
The multiple national record-holder took the top spot with a distance of 6.56 metres. Her winning mark was a meet record and her best leap for the 2024 season. The three-time US Collegiate champion opened with 6.26m before improving to 6.36m. She fouled her third effort and then achieved her best jump of 6.56m in the fourth round. The 2017 Carifta girls' Under-20 heptathlon champion then ended with 6.38m and 6.23m.
Portugal's Evelise Viegs was second with Yanis David of France in third. Both recorded 6.35m.
The triumph was the first for Gittens since finishing college and joined the professional circuit. She was elated at her maiden victory and posted on her Instagram page: "Celebrating my very first professional win. (I am) looking forward to many more. Thanks to everyone who has believed in me even when I struggled to see what was worth believing in. I love you all."
Gittens is seeking to qualify for her second Olympic Games. The 26-year-old was 11th in the women's long jump finals at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. She is in pursuit of the Paris Olympics 6.86m standard and is currently listed at 55th on the Qualification rankings. The former Pan American U-20 bronze medallist has until June 30, the close of the Olympic qualifying period, to achieve the standard or perform significantly well to move the World Rankings and be among the top 32 to be invited to the Paris Olympics set for July 26 to August 11.
The national men's 4x100m team members were hoping to improve their ranking to secure a spot in Paris. However, the quartet of Kion Benjamin, Jonathan Farinha, Omari Lewis and Devin Augustine clocked 38.99 seconds to finish second at the NACAC New Life Invitational in Nassau, Bahamas on Sunday.
T&T currently sits at the 16th on the World Rankings for the men's 4x100m and with 16 teams to qualify for Paris, the local sprinters could be ousted should any other team surpass the 38.30 posted by the red, white and black runners at the World Relays in the Bahamas on May 5.
With the African Championships coming up later this week in Cameroon all eyes will be in the men's 4x100m relay finals as Botswana and Kenya seek to surpass T&T's team and secure their tickets to Paris.
After Benjamin, Farinha, Lewis and Augustine completed relay duties for T&T in Nassau on Sunday they contested the individual events.
Farinha won the men's 200m B finals in a season's best time of 20.69 seconds, 0.01 off his personal best. Lewis was third in the men's 100m A finals in 10.10 seconds, missing his best time of 10.08 set earlier this year. Augustine was seventh (10.21). Benjamin raced to silver in the B finals in 10.21.
All four are expected to clash at the National Junior and Senior Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, Port-of-Spain on June 28-30.
Le Bron James secured silver in the men's javelin at the French Foray Meet No 3 in Kingston, Jamaica on Saturday. James, a Sixth Form student at Jamaica College, had a best throw of 67.07 as his school-mate and compatriot Dorian Charles was fourth.
Charles, the 2023 Carifta boys' U-20 javelin silver medallist, had a best effort of 60.58. James threw 68.50m at the French Foray Meet No 1 on May 18, surpassing the 68.00m standard for the men's javelin for the 2024 World Under 20 Track and Field Championships in Lima, Peru from August 27-31.
