Boxer Tianna Guy walked away with a silver medal at the 43rd Copa Independence De Bexeo in Santiago De Los Caballeros, Dominican Republic on Friday night after being beaten by hometown favourite Katerina Vera by a split decision in the final of the 60kg contest.
However, she told Guardian Media she did not believe she had lost the fight, though it was not the main reason for her competing in the tournament.
A day before, Guy, who failed to pull off a victory in her key bout of the first Olympic Qualifiers in Italy recently, got something to cheer about when she defeated Jessica Maria Munoz of the Dominican Republic, the Central American Caribbean (CAC) Games silver medallist in the semifinal.
"It was always difficult fighting in someone's backyard with their judges. With that being said, there were lots of positives to take away from the fight, meaning a lot of the stuff we were working on, strength and conditioning-wise and boxing tactics as well, I was able to implement and execute," said Guy yesterday.
"Do I think the judge's decision was fair - no, but again that's sports, that's boxing and there's no use crying over spilt milk because the point of coming out here is to get that much-needed match practice and that really, and truly was the main goal.
"Beating the CAC silver medallist and walking away with the silver medal was an additional plus. But even if those things were not the result, I still had other goals that I was working on.
"Overall, it is just to focus on the next thing ahead. The main goal is the qualifiers in Thailand and whatever training camps or tournaments that pop up before, on the way to that goal," Guy said.
