Jahiem Harry, William Francis and Hector Sam were the "Most Valuable Players" of the Kelvin Roberts North Zone Basketball Commission's All Stars Day, which celebrated the players of the past, recognising their contributions to the sport.
Stars in all three divisions -First, Under-17 and Over-45 - competed on the exciting day at the Woodbrook Youth Facility in Port-of-Spain on Saturday, and also participated in a shootout competition.
Action commenced with a clash between Team Wesley "Beast" Haynes, coached Milan Stamenkovic and Team Vibert "Passay" Dean, coached by Morgan Shade, in the U-17 Division. At the end of the first period, Team Dean led 23-10 and continued to dominate their opponents and were ahead 42-23 by the half. After the resumption, the story remained the same and Team Vibert eventually won the game 73-61. Francis, who was named the MVP, was the top scorer with 19 points.
Action in the shootout contest followed next, which saw 12 participants in the line-up.
After the preliminary round, the top four participants, including Spartans TT duo Francis and Idris Martin and Adam Salazar and Caleb Ferguson, both of Basic B Academy, faced off. Salazar kept his composure to outscore his rivals, topscoring with 33 points.
In the Over-45 Division match, Team Lincoln "Cripple" Griffith faced off against Marvin Celestine-coached Team Reshawn "Big Youth" Grant. Team Griffith, coached by Ancil Ollivierre, dominated from the start, leading by 34-25 at the end of the half, led by their centre Lanard Emanuel, who dictated the pace of the game. Sam rolled back the years to top score with 23 points to earn the MVP honours. He was ably assisted by David King, who contributed 15 points. Team Griffith eventually won the match-up, 65-43.
The final fixture of the evening saw a high-speed competitive fixture between Team Kevin "Robbie" Roberts, coached by Wayne Sandy, and Team Trevor "Plato" Legendre, coached by Christopher Jackson Charles, in the First Division All Stars clash. At the end of the first period, the score was 28-25 in favour of Team Legendre. The second period was much of the same, closing 54-49 at the half with Team Legendre still ahead.
After the resumption, the teams were locked at 74 apiece at the end of the third period.
Eventually, Team Roberts pulled away to win the encounter 98-95. Harry, who was named MVP, topscored with 22 points.
Coach Charles was among the 25 former players honoured on the day. The NZBC presented them with tokens of appreciation.
