T&T had two of its four sprinters advance to the next round of the 100 metres event Wednesday, the opening day of the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA.
Alexxe Henry and Imani Mills progressed to the semifinals in the women’s event, while neither men’s sprinter—Trevaughn Stewart and Alex Seepersad—advanced from round one.
Henry was an automatic qualifier in heat seven of eight in the women’s dash, finishing in second place in a time of 11.55 seconds. She placed behind Australian Zara Hagan, who took first in 11.40, and ahead of Italy’s Carlotta Suppini, who ran a personal best of 11.57 for third. Fourth-placed Kerelle Etienne also advanced on time with a 11.57 clocking. Henry clocked the 16th-fastest time among the 25 qualifiers.
Mills also advanced as a non-automatic qualifier, placing fourth in heat four with a time of 11.57 seconds to finish 21st overall. She crossed the line behind winner Theianna-Lee Terrelonge of Jamaica (11.21), Germany’s Emma Goretzka (11.29), and Elizabeth Tannis (11.54) of Canada.
Seepersad was first up for T&T, facing the starter in the third of eight heats.
Running out of lane seven, he placed fifth in 10.51 and was 31st overall. Meanwhile, Stewart finished higher in the overall rankings, placing 22nd after crossing fourth in lane one of heat six with a 10.41 clocking.
Mills was scheduled to line up in lane one of semifinal heat one, while Henry was to race in heat two, lane three. Both local sprinters were aiming to reach today’s medal race at 11.35 pm (T&T time).
Also on Thursday, the quartermilers will take to the track from 1.45 pm. Zackery Frank and Kiile Alexander will compete in round one of the men’s 400m, while Kayla Charles and Kyah Hyson will tackle the women’s race. Charles will be up first in heat five of seven in lane five at 1.21 pm, followed by Hyson in the next heat in lane three at 1.35 pm.
All four will seek to reach the semifinals Wednesday night, with the final carded for tomorrow.
Later in the day, Kristiano Perez will compete in Group A of the men’s triple jump qualification round starting at 3 pm.
He will try to achieve the automatic qualifying mark of 16.00m or at least finish among the top 12 to reach the final, set for tomorrow.
Also in action Thursday is Omari Brown, who will race in heat four of the men’s 400m hurdles from lane two. The semifinals are set for Saturday, with the final on Sunday.
