Hillaire wins Kentucky one-lap sprint

T&T's Dwight St Hillaire con­tin­ued his ex­cel­lent show­ing this sea­son, pulling away to win the men's 400 me­tres dash at the Ken­tucky In­vi­ta­tion­al at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Ken­tucky (UK) Track and Field Com­plex in Lex­ing­ton, Ken­tucky, USA on Sat­ur­day.

He won in a time of 45.81 sec­onds to be among UK's 19 vic­to­ries at the two-day event. St Hillaire al­so placed sec­ond in the 200m with a wind-as­sist­ed 20.51 (3.0). Lat­er, he was part of the men's 4x100m re­lay vic­to­ri­ous team, an­chor­ing them across to line in 39.54.

An­oth­er T&T ath­lete Er­ic Har­ri­son al­so had a suc­cess­ful out­ing for Ohio State at the Jesse Owens In­vi­ta­tion­al host­ed by his in­sti­tu­tion, which ran from Fri­day to Sat­ur­day in Colum­bus, Ohio.

Har­ri­son com­plet­ed the sprint dou­ble win­ning the men's 100m in a wind-as­sist­ed 10.22 (2.6), this af­ter ad­vanc­ing with the fastest qual­i­fy­ing time of 10.22 (4.0) from the pre­lim­i­nary heats.

He sprint­ed to vic­to­ry in the 200m, cross­ing first in a very windy 20.73 (7.6). Har­ri­son al­so nabbed gold in the 4x100m, mak­ing the sec­ond han­dover to see his team over the line in 39.56. He and his Ohio State team­mates just missed out on a top three fin­ish in the 4x400, plac­ing fourth with 3:20.00.

Pur­due fresh­man Nao­mi Camp­bell was hop­ing to do the same in the women's ver­sion of the sprint events but she was un­suc­cess­ful. She had the ninth fastest time of 11.99 (4.1) out of the pre­lim­i­nary heats in the 100m but reached the fi­nal af­ter two qual­i­fiers opt­ed out the medal race. The first-year stu­dent/ath­lete clocked 11.85 (4.3) to fin­ish sev­enth.

In the 200m timed fi­nal, her 24.82 (4.1)-clock­ing placed her 12th. How­ev­er, she didn't leave emp­ty-hand­ed though as she part of the Pur­due quar­tet in the 4x100, who sealed a sil­ver with a time of 45.43.

Mis­sis­sip­pi State sopho­more Tyriq Hors­ford was a sec­ond-place fin­ish­er in the men's javelin throw at the Ma­roon and White In­vite in Mis­sis­sip­pi. He tossed the spear 72.20m to win a sil­ver.

At th M City Clas­sic in Min­neapo­lis, Kion Ben­jamin of Min­neso­ta sprint­ed to gold in the men's 100m. The fresh­man clocked 10.25 (2.0) for the win and al­so got gold and sil­ver in the re­lay events. His team won the 4x400m (3:12.49) and placed sec­ond in the 4x100m (40.11).

On Sat­ur­day at the Louisiana State Uni­ver­si­ty (LSU) In­vi­ta­tion­al at the Bernie Moore Track in Ba­ton Rouge, Louisiana, both Uni­ver­si­ty of Al­aba­ma ath­letes Cherisse Mur­ray and Joshua St Clair copped sil­ver while LSU's Akan­ni His­lop did not suc­cess in his lone event.

Mur­ray, a ju­nior, placed sec­ond in the women's shot put with a 16.76m-throw while St Clair, an­oth­er third-year stu­dent/ath­lete, helped his team to the run­ner-up spot in the men's 4x400m re­lay event with 3:12.77. He al­so com­pet­ed in the 400m and placed 13th with a 47.95-clock­ing.

LSU se­nior His­lop's 21.24 (-0.3) tim­ing placed him 11th in the men's 200m.

Texas A&M ju­nior Uni­ver­si­ty's (TAMU) Tyra Git­tens fea­tured in one event at the Alum­ni Muster, a field events meet, in Col­lege Sta­tion, Texas and fin­ished eighth in the women's javelin throw. The NCAA pen­tathlon and high jump cham­pi­on sent the spear 37.19m.

Uni­ver­si­ty of South Flori­da (USF) sopho­more Kade­sha Prescott raced in two events at the North Flori­da In­vite but on­ly had suc­cess in the team event. She helped her squad fin­ish sec­ond in the women's 4x100m (44.20). This af­ter plac­ing 14th in the women's 100m with 11.87 (-1.7) in the pre­lim­i­nary round and did not ad­vance to the fi­nal.

Rae-Ann Serville of the Uni­ver­si­ty of South­ern Cal­i­for­nia (USC) raced in the women's 400m at the UCLA v USC Dual Meet in Los An­ge­les, Cal­i­for­nia on Sun­day. The fresh­man placed sev­enth with 53.08.

North­ern Iowa fresh­man Jabari Fox and schol­mate sopho­more On­al Mitchell faced off in the men's 4x400m re­lay at the Illi­nois State In­vi­ta­tion­al meet over the week­end. Fox ran the third leg for Northen Iowa "B" team, help­ing his unit cross fourth in 3:19.65 while Mitchell's "A" team was dis­qual­i­fied.

On Fri­day, Al­isha St Louis of East­ern Michi­gan had mixed re­sults in the jump events at the Gold­en Griz­zlies Mi­ni Meet at Oak­land Uni­ver­si­ty in Rochester, Michi­gan. The grad­u­ate stu­dent/se­nior topped the women's triple jump with 11.46m and fin­ished fourth in the long jump with 5.31m (7.8).
